What brand smoke & carbon monoxide detector is recommended for a houseboat? The Kidde brand we were using tells us their detectors are not designed for use on a boat. The Kidde units we were using sounded off a co alarm. The only thing that was different was we had a leaky battery in the aft area with a strong sulfur smell. Kidde said this would not have set off the co alarm. What are your thoughts on this? Do we need to install different detectors?

Use a marine grade CO Detector like the MTI Industry 651-541. Smoke detector can be any residential type.

Renovation costs are so fluid I did not think it would be useful including any in the video. Each boat we did had its own scope of renovation required and since all six boats done were completed over a 10-12 year time frame - inflation would make any estimates provided out of date. However, with a broad brush approach, our first renovation cost us about $20K (excluding the cost of the boat itself) and the last and biggest one, about $70K.

To hold an 80 foot houseboat weighing about 30 tons, you would need anchors of about 100lb each. Any boat I have seen with an anchor this big uses anchor winches just to get them up out of the water. I still can’t imagine how you would deploy an anchor from each corner of the boat.

I love this series of videos but I have to say there are some inconsistency for example diesels will out last gasoline engine by a long shot mostly due to diesel being a lubricant and are more powerful due to high energy density of this fuel. Note there's more energy in diesel fuel then gasoline
@houseboats1013
@houseboats1013 Жыл бұрын
You are correct about diesel containing more energy than gasoline - my mistake. However, lifetime of the two types is less significant in a boat as the rest of the boat (hull, outdrives and superstructure) will limit the life span of the whole vessel.

@@roydora I believe Gibson have started manufacturing again so you might actually be able to get a new one. If you go for an older one, make sure you get a survey done particularly looking at the hull, stringer and tank conditions. Most houseboats (with the exception of Lazy Days) have low freeboard at the bow, so anything more than a two-to-three-foot swell is going to be a problem.

I mentioned in one of the first videos of the series that we have only bought Sumersets - mainly due to quality of construction and, as we purchased more of them, familiarity. They were the premier builder at the time for the vintage of boats we were buying. Stardust quality in the 90’s and early 2000’s was not near Sumerset. Later Stardust boats have improved that quality of workmanship and since Trifecta took the reigns, is equal to Sumerset and Thoroughbred (since they are now all in the same factory). Just my humble opinion.

I have absolutely zero experience doing this, That being said i came across your channel and have been binge watching them since last night. I am very thankful you took the time to make these very informative series. If only there was more content on the subject of renovating house boats on youtube. I noticed in one of your videos you mentioned it would probably be your last video due to you feel as if you have covered everything. Maybe you could create another series talking about how your thought process worked while renovating (i.e How to identify dead space and maximize its potential, If flipping the boat what are some of the key elements you focused on that maximized your profit without going overboard, Easiest/Efficient methods on how to do certain things such as pulling wires from one end of the boat to the other etc..) I feel like you could really help out and fill the missing void that so many people are searching for because A) they just cant find any videos that explain it, or B) They were to afraid to ask / weren't informed enough to ask the question. Either way i love your channel and will be telling others on the dock so they too can be well informed and perhaps give them inspiration the same way it has for me.

I did recently paint some of the black and silver straight stipes, and the front surface of the fly bridge. I used Rustoleum Top Side marine paint. Primer first over the fly bridge as it was in the worst shape, after sanding, then two top coats, light sanding after first. On the stripes, I just light sanded then rolled and tipped the top coat. Silver stipes were the hardest (I was using Rustoleum Aluminum paint which is VERY runny) - one top coat. I haven’t found a color match for the brown-red stripes yet.

@houseboats1013
@houseboats1013 2 жыл бұрын
Black is certainly the way to go as black Sunbrella will not fade as easily as other colors. However, for the party top, it does get hot underneath in summer. I tried putting styrofoam panels under the top, which stopped the heat radiating down, but the wind kept moving the panels around. I removed the styrofoam and replaced it with insulating wrap like you sometimes see around hot water tanks. This stuff comes in 100ft x 4ft rolls and is white on one side and silver on the other. Slid this under the canvas and overlayed the stips and joined them with white duct tape. Has been very effective and with the white side down, makes it brighter under the top.

Rub over with a deglossing chemical to tone down any gloss on the oak and to “clean” the surfaces. Then roll and brush on a suitable primer. Follow up with a final coat of good paint like Sherwin Williams Duration or Super Paint - satin finish rolled and brushed. Precision is needed where walls meet cabinets and ceiling. Color is grey/white not pure white. Custom formula from Sherwin Williams.

Once again, most excellent content from Captain Doug! Thank you for this video! Do you use Aqua-Kem as well for your black water system? Your story about dock lines reminded me about an experience I had as a kid on our houseboat. We were beached up north of Browns Bridge and a squall with a tornado came through. It snapped the lines we had used to secure the stern of our houseboat to shore, and our houseboat blew parallel to and was teetering on the beach. Once the storm passed, we had to use a ski boat to pull our houseboat off the beach. The waves were rocking so hard that our fridge scooted out into the hallway because of it. Pretty wild, and even after that we still love houseboating!!
