this video very concisely demonstrates why knowing music theory is so crucial on a practical level when it comes to composition/production. and I'm saying this as someone who has resisted learning theory since I started playing and producing 10 years ago. I mean, one Thundercat solo will show you why knowing theory inside and out is fucking cheat code, but it always seemed like such a lofty, obtuse thing to study. Especially as a more avant garde artist searching for the weirdest chord structures possible, I always thought "why do I need to know how to play a II - V - I when I'm trying to make something completely outside the box, won't this approach inhibit my creative experimentation?" and that was absolutely the wrong take to have. "You have to learn the rules before you can break them" has proven itself to be true. If you know the common patterns and shapes, you bend them in interesting ways, vs just sitting down and slowly writing a progression through trial and error. I can attest to how much that shit sucks if you're not a savant level player/composer. But goddamn do I wish I took a course in theory before I had a kid lol. if anyone has any (preferably free) beginners courses on theory to recommend, it'd be a big help. Preferably from a "modern producers" approach instead of one geared players and composers. But theory is theory so I'll take whatever works best really lol

Do you feel it truly has enough dynamic layers? IK had been completely cagey and silent on directly answering the question on how many dynamic layers there are on average, which makes one think it's not as much as one would hope.
@ZacBarnesMusic
@ZacBarnesMusic 9 күн бұрын
That’s a great question, and fair point. So for me personally, I really like the Nord pianos and those only have 4 velocity layers….and I make beautiful sounds and songs with that. I think garritan or ravenscrodt is better if you are looking for raw dynamic range, but in terms of tonality and sound, I think this piano verse is a strong contender. Also, consider the fact that I’m mostly I. Studio and session work where dynamic range is important, but I won’t need as much if I’m doing a solo pianist concerto. I think that’s where ravenscroft really takes the cake. That was a great question, thanks for chiming in!

Sounds like you really want a Nord man… you have probably figured out you can’t buy a grandstage X yet… I was seriously thinking about getting stage 4 buy then the stage 5 will come out and I will feel bad. You are right if you have the money get what you want …oh what you have a stage 3….you are cracking me up dude. You don’t need a new piece of hardware you need software and a midi controller. For whatever reason the Nords just sound better. Especially the strings. The difference in strings is insane but strings is just a side thing for piano players. Vc1 midi by Kawai is the real buy it and not have worry about again thing. There is your next video..edit I went back and watched a couple minutes of your videos….i have never seen you before…..bottom line you are a great piano player and you definitely deserve a Nord and you have a very nice one…have a great day.

I have a question @Saucy Sounds - I bought the SE-1 a few months ago and I love it, BUT, the manual it came with is very vague about how to layer all the sounds, percussion, etc. to make it sound like the songs in the demo. Do you have enough experience with it to give me some detailed instructions on HOW to put it all together? I'm finding, for instance, when I press the "chords" button, the entire keyboard starts to play in bass notes. Any clue why? I'm also unsure how to start percussion a few bars into a song, and not necessarily right at the start. I want to make friends with this amazing piano but right now, we're having a lot of irreconcilable differences LOL.
