Korean War M1 bayonet is in fact a shortened M1 bayonet wit reprofiled blade and issued to South Korean troops after their M1 Carbines were replaced by M1 Garands. These bayonets can use the same M8 scabbard that the M4 bayonet for the M1 Carbine uses. I actually own one of these bayonets. The one I have started out life as a Springfield made M1905 bayonet it has the Springfield H heat treat stamp on the handle.

Same here. I think the movies started it all. Of course the little green army guys. Most of all, I joined the military because my grandfather was in Vietnam and my great great uncle died in WWII. He and I ended up being the same rank and in the same division all said and done. I leaned early on that most of my grandfathers Vietnam stuff was just tossed in the garbage by his mother. And that always stuck with me. So I saved all I could of my own stuff including my Kevlar that went to Iraq twice and once to Korea. Of course I brought stuff back from my deployed like patches and armbands and stuff. And it’s been an uphill battle since then 😂

All good info. Cash is great, but my area of collecting (Iraq/OIF) isn’t really found in person. And the stuff you do find is questionable (no provenance) and/or ridiculously priced (“rare”). Lots of stuff pops up on eBay. BUT you really need to know what’s authentic and what’s complete BS trying to scam you out of your money. Unfortunately, it’s not only the “rare” Saddam era stuff that’s being faked, but even modern day Iraq army, Air Force, and police stuff all the way up to today is being copied. Once you know a theater made patch, you know. There’s even small batches of fake weathered patches coming out of Asia now just like the Vietnam fakes. Of course there’s stuff out there that hasn’t been seen or on the market yet. Which is always a great chance to learn and talk to the Facebook groups about. There’s also books out there that show Iraqi patches with measurements and translations which is a great start. One reason I don’t get into WWII or Vietnam IS the amount of straight up fakes out there and my lack of knowledge and hands on. And that’s happening to the Middle East collectors market now. With that said, I think the most important thing before price is research. I’ve bought a lot of patches from known collectors and ones that have been featured in books from the author. Knowledge is key to not getting ripped off. Plus I have my own items I brought back with me between 2006 and 2009 to compare to. Anyway. Keep up the great work.

We all definitely got to be careful with collection. Definitely don't want to get burned on fake stuff. Lots of it out there. We for sure need to study, research and learn all we can about what to look for.

Good points and great advice. Research, networking, and knowing the market goes a long way. I try to be responsible and not spend what I don’t have. nice helmet pot, not sure what the color blue or af and insignia was for, all navy helmets ive had were grey to dark grey paint to match ship colors. color could be for airforce in the mid to late 50s to match airforce uniforms of that color of that period.

my first rule of buying for my collection that started in 1980 was not to use my salary for it. i started by finding a rare german helmet in 1981 and selling it for 1500.00 set up a military bank account, bought from that money to make more money and keep some of the stuff along the way. set up at gun shows and military shows and the profits went into guns and miitaria for the next show and kept some items. never kept it all at anytime. over 45 years of that i built up a great collection and bank account. used the money for vacations for the family even my kids education in college. never used my salary, militaria became a second job that i used as i pleased, because my salary took care of the family and the bills. now i use the items that are left for retirement expenses.

great info! what id add is, the time to buy is when you see something. though thats not as true in the internet age being able to search out stuff as opposed just buying whataver youre coming across. like you said if somethings maybe a little more than you want to pay but its something you really like, its probably better to get it then lament not getting later on. always know exactly what you have before you sell anything. ive sold off stuff that i thought was one thing that turned out to be another and now wish i still had. plus you never know how you might expand what you collect only to regret selling something that falls into that category. write everything down about what you buy, how much you paid, what stuff it was with, where you got it. you might think that youll always remember such details, but you probably wont. and adjunct to this allways take a notebook, or pocket reference guide or the like where you can record what youre looking for, and what you already have. its easy as your collection grows to forget you have something mundane and buy a duplicate when you dont need to. well, thats about all i can think of now.
