The Sonic franchise is much more consistent about depicting westerners as human beings instead of racist caricatures. That won't make you very popular in Japan.
@amanofnoreputation21647 минут бұрын
Well, maybe we have a point of comparison here. Why would a piece of media being aesthetically pluralistic and openminded work if it's still _tonally racist_ and misogynistic? Because that's what Japan has been trying in order to recapture _my_ interest.

Japan hates Sonic because SEGA America fucked it up.
@n64fan6022 минут бұрын
0:58 *"Their home console, the 'Mega Drive', known as 'Genesis' in the West..."* Kinda, but not really. SEGA named it 'Mega Drive' almost everywhere except North America, where it's called 'Genesis' because of a trademark dispute, and in South Korea, it was sold as the 'Super Gam*Boy' and later the 'Super Aladdin Boy'.

It astounds me that Sonic isn't more popular in Japan, as it's probably one of the most fundamentally japanese franchises ever. It has everything. Shonen, kawaii, mecha, kaiju, etc. Sonic himself is also the perfect mix of anime protagonist and western superhero.

Sonic needs a modern-day anime. Sonic hasn't had any blockbuster hits since the early 2000's. Japan was sort of interested in Frontiers. But that's the first game Japan looked at since Sonic Heroes, Adventure 2, Adventure and the classics. If Sega really wanna appeal to their Japanese audience. Getting an anime and getting bands like One Ok Rock or Dance Gavin Dance to work on the music. Majority of modern Sonic games are usually bad to mediocre at best. Sega are not willing to adapt.

Yes, you make a great point. I’m an east asian Sonic fan, so I know how Sonic is struggling to become mainstream here. I don’t even know how to explain it other than it’s not a right fit culturally. The movies stick out like a sore thumb because the humor is different too. I think if Sonic was made into a 3d animation like the Mario movie, it probably would’ve done better, but still not by much.
@TheDayd111returnsСағат бұрын
Bro, that's what I've been saying! The movie should have been 3D animation like the Mario movie. The fact they dumbed it down to a live action w/ 3D animated CGI characters was not a good move. It would been much better. I agree. I'm from America, and even I know Sonic is struggling in Asia. Sadly, I believe Sonic needs an anime to help push him in Japan.

The Sega Dream Cast was ahead of its time! Sonic Adventure & Sonic Adventure 2 were some of the best Sonic 3D Games! Frontier is definitely the right step towards the right direction!
@TheDayd111returnsСағат бұрын
Funny enough, Japanese fans loved the classics, Adventure games, and Heroes. They stopped paying attention to Sonic after the early 2000's. Sonic Frontiers was #4 on Japan's bestselling games of the year when it was released. So that's a decent step forward. But Sega is not the same company are not the same company as they used to be. A lot of the best video game makers from their industry either quit, retired or moved on to other things. So, we're stuck with these new gen developers who can't make Sonic games to save their lives. I think Sega making a really good Sonic anime will help out his popularity over there.

It's not "hated". Japan has better fiction media than the US and Sonic just pales in comparison to what they have in Japan. Sonic is more geared to kids over there.
@TheDayd111returnsСағат бұрын
In my opinion, Sonic needs to the Mega Man X treatment. Japan should develop a Sonic Shonen anime. Something like Naruto. Which kids, teens and adults will all enjoy together. Sega marketing Sonic for children is what ruined his legacy and his original attitude persona.

In my opinion, Sonic X was too soft. I feel like they really water it down. It should've had the Mega Man X type of serious storytelling. Maybe nowadays, Sega should make a new Sonic anime that can rival with shows like Naruto and them.

@TheDayd111returns59 минут бұрын
Actually, Sonic was incredibly popular in Japan during the 90's and early 2000's. Japan loved the classic games, Adventure, Adventure 2 and Heroes. They sold very well over there. It was the mid 2000's that killed Sonic's popularity worldwide. Sonic 06 was one of the reasons. Japan just don't like Sonic nowadays because he's marketed too much for children instead for 12+ year old people.

SEGA in general has a better impression with international audiences. Yet their grip with Sonic as the basis of their IPs meant that standards are at an unstable equilibrium. So, their secondary IPs will fade. Not without fandoms but not with declining relevance. People joked with Sonic series mimicking other games. Yet SEGA has not developed outstanding separate mascot games. Particularly parallels to ones like Zelda, Metroid, and Kirby. Although there has been Yakuza (RGG), Vocaloids, and Phantasy Star. Especially noticeable with their racing game having IPs that fans clamor for resurrections. So, the purchasing of Atlus and other studios to be subsidiaries MAY help them have secondary ownership to fame. It really depends on whether they improve branding SEGA to a stable recognized identity.
@TheDayd111returns56 минут бұрын
Sega was the shit back in the 90's to early 2000's. Phantasy Star Online was groundbreaking and one of the first online RPG interacting games. Virtua Fighter being the first 3D fighting video game. They had a lot of innovative hits. But a lot of the original Sega developers left the company ages ago. Sega just isn't the same anymore.

@starpier10 сағат бұрын
The word HATE is an exaggeration. Sonic was marketed for the West and it worked wonders, especially in NA. In Japan it is just less popular but far from unknown. Just take a stroll inside Tokyo Joypolis and you get the idea of Sonic presence in Japan. They are (or rather were) especially strong in the arcade games. It is just a marketing decision, nothing to do with Sonic vs Mario personality. SEGA didnt even try to win the japanese console market, they knew Nintendo was too strong a presence in Japan. The Saturn was a nice surprise for them, I do not believe it was planned to be a success in Asia. Why the Genesis was so beloved in NA? Excellent marketing, they even shipped consoles with Sonic included in the box, pissing off SEGA of Japan.

I was at my weekly Japanese conversation club only a week or so ago and I was curious what the native speakers' thoughts were on Sonic and when asked if they knew of it, they were like "oh I do know that, but it's not popular in Japan at all. Probably only older people will know of it" and me and the other Americans were SO shocked. They didn't even know there were new movies out for it!! (And before I got a photo up, this one guy was like "did you mean Son Goku?" I was dying bro). But this is all to say, your timing for this video is impeccable and I'm definitely gonna be sharing it with the club
