Evo Morales and Hugo Chavez were both left populists. Syriza and Podemos are left wing populist parties. Of course Bernie Sanders is a left-wing populist, although not all that left-wing.

Hugo Chavez (Venezuela) and Evo Morales (Bolivia) would be good recent examples. Syriza and Podemos are examples of left wing populist parties. www.populismstudies.org/Vocabulary/left-wing-populism/ Of course in the US we have Bernie Sanders, but he was not able to "gain power."

This was a very cathartic chat. It's seemingly impossible to identify, but there seems to be this ever-expanding sense within Liberal domains that 'something's off' and 'something's missing. But it's seemingly impossible to identify. Nevertheless, it seems like people are plagued by an intimation that SOMETHING is repressed. Which is why Liberalism is so impossible to wrestle with. It's like a pseudo-solution to a problem which it is characteristically unique in (delusionally) deeming a solvable problem. It 'methodologically brackets' that which would tell it that it can't, of its own determination, bracket. ('I give myself the rights to give myself the rights to give myself the rights...' ad infinitum.) As such, it is inherently self-universalizing, spatially but also temporally ('perpetual revolution in means'), being as it is the commitment to solving universally present 'problems' that are unsolvable (i.e. aren't 'problems'). It's as though it were a 'methodological' or 'merely pragmatic' bracketing of 'the one thing necessary,' and if it's ever pointed out the futility of its resulting perpetual chase after a red herring, it just points to its ever-accumulating mountain of unproductive products and declares 'Yes, but look at all the incidental by-product we nevertheless enjoy due to this interminable chase after je n'e sais quoi!' It is endless ameliorative without having the slightest interest in 'the big picture,' as though it is constitutionally incapable of 'seeing the forest' (for the trees). This is built into its epistemology and vice versa. In this it is inherently sophistic, as its 'pragmatism' survives philosophical criticism the same way the Sophists survived Socrates, that is, by deeming him irrelevant and ignoring him. The avoidance of philosophy is philosophically possible ONLY because it is, well, the avoidance of philosophy. Idiocy, being by etymological definition solipsistic, is sustainable due only to its, well, idiocy. All of which is a function of the Cartesian Inversion of the pro nobis and the in se. Liberalism ('worldliness,' univocal immanence, positivism et al) is the product of conflating epistemological and ontological priority, Descartes giving the pro nobis axiological priority because it has epistemological priority (rather than giving ontology axiological priority because it, well, axiologically HAS priority by definition). Paradoxically, our 'self-divinization' and our 'banal pragmatism) are one and the same, the project to 'become as gods' and the common opinion that we're respectfully honoring the transcendent by minding our own business, not to presuming to meddle with or intefere in the 'transcendent' are one and the same. It is 'the perpetual production and proliferation of panaceas.' In all of this it seems to me 'trans-human' from the jump, all the way at least with Bacon. It's designed 'by, of and for' a 'trans-human' human, a philosophical anthropology which defines itself in such a way that the very notion of bothering with contemplation, with philosophical anthropology, seems redundant. Per the epistemo-ontological inversion, it's as though the contingent (e.g. the perceived present) and non-contingent (the theoretical eternal) trade places, a move which theoretically is permissible only post hoc, i.e. only from the power possessed from the position post-switch. Thus the paradox of an eminently (self-declared) 'pragmatic' people appearing to be 'wandering armies clash[ing] by night,' so many stupid perpetual motion atoms in a void suffering from a proliferation of existential and identity crises. Which is to say, a populace that has everything EXCEPT a mindful, confident understanding of what would truly bring it peace. Apropos of your guest's point, the drift is inexorable because the 'conservatives' in America aren't actually 'conservative' at all, the upshot being that any apparent 'conservative consensus' is destined to dissolve as the whole crew are willing to make their own -- never agreed upon -- 'concessions.' Either the actually uncommitted pseudo-'conservatives' move in the direction toward more committed integratio or else they've nothing left to them but to drift little by little, one seemingly trivial concession after the next, willy nilly in piecemeal fashion toward a universally integrated transhumanist system.

In Jewish culture there is a deep understanding of the complexity of problems and positive despair in terms of trying not to blame the self or others, but instead trying to understand the situation itself. It’s mostly a product of being the scapegoat and the hated other for so long. My great grandfather was murdered in St. Louis for the crime of being a Jew. They didn’t want Jews in the neighborhood. But my Grandfather was never hostile towards other groups of people. He was just always was thinking about why, what it was about the architecture of society that produces situations where people shift the blame to the self or others rather than looking at what’s going on systemically. My mother asked the same question and so do I.

How come the aspect of "settler colonial society" and "garrison mentality" do not show up in all such talk about fear and anxiety? America, much like Canada whatever form of governance are settler colonial society and white garrison states above all else.. Then what f*ck all fascism or communism. What democracy. America is not even a real nation.

The description/definition of narcissism you derived from Lasch's book (via Sigmund Freud) ignores the practical considerations with respect to what will and will not keep us alive. Narcissus did not fall in love with himself as a mature, psychologically healthy human being. He fell in "love" with (read: was fixated upon) an image that he saw in a pond. And an image, no matter how beautiful, remains without sustenance. It is empty. The questions begged: • what are the roots of narcissism • what might be the causal factors related to a person seeing themselves as only an image, unable to draw from a wellspring of being from within. The object relations theorists, e.g., Heinz Kohut, Otto Kernberg, Edith Jacobson, Margaret Mahler, provided rich insight into the roots of narcissism and, too, approaches for healing. The therapeutic process is not for the meek. And those who do the work break the cycle of generational narcissism. I appreciate both your and Lasch's effort to discuss narcissism and the suffering it creates, albeit a bit more investigation into its meaning and the associated causal elements would be helpful to those new to the word and the subject matter.

I am a Catholic but with mixed religious info/insights from multiple Catholic and Protestant sources, fairly inspired by Catholic social teaching as well as the best of Protestant theology (think Stanley Hauerwas). I guess probably not your usual Catholic in the US, but serious nonetheless. I support the Catholic Worker movement which welcomes people of all or no religious persuasion to engage in direct mutual aid.

@maurinacademy Thankyou for your reply and glad to see your Catholic I often thought Jung mistook his vision of God deficating on the church. I think God was trying to show him His opinion of the Protestant faith. And I believe alchemy is in the Eucharist Jesus gave us all.we need for spiritual alchemy but didn't explain the Heavenly details because then( in His time )and even now human beings can't comprehend the nous.

I've been really enjoying ALL your content for a few months, so I was definitely surprised to hear the name of my grandmother's cousin, Ezra Taft Benson. I grew up Mormon and Benson eventually became the prophet of that church. His life was fascinating, but he had an obsession with being anti communist, and he was very paranoid and made enemies out of friends. Even calling his former benefactor, Eisenhower, a communist. And of course accusing the civil rights movement of being a communist front. Mormon leaders had to forbid him from using Mormon churches to host John Birch Society meetings (before he was in charge of course). The interesting thing about his role in Mormonism is that under his leadership, he strongly encouraged all Mormons to have dry and canned food storage enough to feed a family for a year. He likely envisioned some kind of communist war or apocalypse but I remember having food storage at home as a child. Of course this food storage was not made by us - we ordered it through catalogs. Some very influential Mormon families in Utah with enormous farms were likely the source. Thanks again for your wonderful videos.

Hobbes - more of a citizen can lead to conflict. Instead we link up for safety and security. Comparing to ancient view as shaping souls/telos/discussion Ancient - morality public Modern - morality private (realised lots of violence). Hobbes - one religion publicly but privately still can believe whatever. Hobbes - virtue as determined by law because matter of perspective, the sovereign arbitrarily defines it. Legal positivism. All agree to accept this because not doing so again leads to civil breakdown Machiavelli - virtue as skill without concern for morality.

Intellectuals/religious people think too much about politics, a cause for suspicion. Not so for ancients but for moderns it's different now. Commerce for example. It's better because more comfort leads to less infighting. Can look at society in different ways to way you are brought up

Aristotle social political animals because of exclusive speech. Hobbes - unique because kill over an insult. Honour as admiration of other people (wealth/women etc). Magnanimous. Christianity - emphasis on humility, criticises magnanimity as bestowing onto others. Plato - wisdom etc.

15:38 “not conservative enough” seems to mean here not having a tragic view of the prospects of escaping liberalism. Part of Augustine’s theology was that salvation really truly takes place and redeems the earth in the City of God. The earthly city is passing away, Christ is victorious, and liberal toleration need never have been instituted to save us from our own “crooked timber.”

No individual creates his world except in the basic way our brains orient us. Science has allowed freedom from religion and other coersion. Inevitably, we suffer from conflict. Then. If lucky, we will learn how to cooperate with others. A few learn quicker by having faith in good direction from elders.

Among young adults with severe mental illness whom I've encountered, they are mostly male, addicted to opioids, and have been converted in prison by white gangs to the most popular form of American neo-nazism, mystical notions of Odin ('Wotan")-worship and peculiar racial theories about so-called bloodlines in which Jews aren't really Jews, etc. Although raised in ordinary Modern Orthodox Judaism and having known a woman who as a child was experimented on by Mengele, I found these worst of the so-called deplorables to be generally sympathetic, as gifted and heartfelt as most young men generally are. And of course they are, what else should they be? They are lucky enough just to still be alive.

16:05 I've had the same key experience with a grandmother who was successfully treated for severe mental illness. Before her condition became severe, she had been an amateur historian, enjoyed reading the Restoration playwrights, and had met the Beatles and other celebrities socially. But she decided to stop taking her medications and go back to being who she was.
