Alliteration is in fact frequently used in Old English poetry, and in Beowulf in particular. It is sort of like how rhyming is used in modern day poetry. Great episode. I started reading the book, but stopped when I realized that getting rid of the Ordinarys made the country 100% Elite, which makes calling them Elite pointless. You can't be Elite without something to be superior to. In Payden's defense though, if I pickpocketed a note that had my childhood address, I would think "Wow, what a freaky coincidence. But I guess the house can't remain empty forever. Someone must have moved in." And then I would think about how Time truly do be like that and never think about it again.

I don't know if I can ever think of much to say on SBU's poetry videos, but I definitely appreciate them. It's always a nice exploration of the topic which I've found difficult to stumble upon otherwise- I think whatever gets pushed to me either tends to be too clickbaity, too up its own ass, or forgoes too much of the technical side for my liking. But Jay's perspective always unites the talk about content and craft in an insightful way that actually makes me feel like I'm learning something :) so I hope to see more!

Sad to see no one clock the animal shapeshifters going insane after a certain amount of time was probably inspired by animorphs, the characters in that would get stuck as animals if they didn't change back for a few hours, so another thing the author didn't come up with on their own and why its the only power with a catch :V

Kate’s take on genderfluidity reminds me of something I wrote like 1.5 years ago about a genderfluid changeling. They alternated between she, he, they and the rare but still involved it, and over years of practice, they’d trained themself to reflexively change their form when they felt their gender changing. The difference between them and Dionysus here was that they didn’t just immediately have this ability. They spent, as I said, multiple years developing it. They have experience with gender dysphoria, which I feel like this version of Dionysus really doesn’t. Hell, there was even a moment where the changeling’s abilities were restricted due to outside plot reasons, and he was stuck in a feminine body while distinctly masculine, which was very deeply troubling and violating for him. I don’t consider myself genderfluid. I’m nonbinary and my expression changes day to day (been pretty masc lately), but I do still feel like anyone has the potential to write a genderqueer character even if their genders don’t align. You know how I did it? Research. Read about the experience of genderqueer people so you can understand how it feels to not be part of the binary. Once you get over the anxiety and the, “But but what if I do it wrong and they throw stones at me?” mentality, it really isn’t very hard. Granted, I’m nonbinary so I could very well have an easier time than a cis person (as possibly evidenced by my recently realized tendency to write primarily trans characters), but even still. If you’re a cis woman and you can write about a man, then you can write about a genderqueer person too.

Yeahhhh it just rang SO disingenuous in this book. I wouldn’t have minded if the raunchy party god just happened to shapeshift to a woman sometimes for kicks, but Cait Corrain wanted you to spend upwards of $20 on this book on the grounds that it’s somehow an authentic reflection of your experiences, and that she’s the sole champion of queer rights or whatever. It’s so nauseating. Just from what you’re saying in your comment I can tell you’ve done multiple times the research that Cait did, or at least conveyed in the book

In regard to Dionysus and Ariadne’s characters constantly talking about how worried they are and how much they care for the oppressed and downtrodden but not actually doing anything about it; that’s an ingenious little writer’s trick called Tell Don’t Show! I feel like anime is pervasive enough at this point that you don't need to watch anime to pick up some anime leanings. That, or it's pervasiveness means that we can use it to give a name and genre to that sort of simplistic/cartoonish style where they use extreme actions and reactions to really drive home to the reader or watcher how they are meant to be feeling.

When stuff like this happens, does the author have to give the money back? It wasn’t as if the book got delayed by crazy readers, corrain got it cancelled because of her own actions, so thus the money the publishers invested was maliciously squandered. If i gave someone $50k and got nothing back because they chose to light it all on fire, id demand compensation. But i am no publisher/business person.
