I'm making my own 1-5/8 Norton commando pipes, should I form the flange or tig a ring in there?
@RaysonsExhaust2 ай бұрын
It depends on wether have the facilities to turn down the nut.. I usually screw the nut in, all the way, and look to see how much of gap there is behind it... if there isn't much of a gap then I will hammer on the end.. if there is a massive gap, then I will make a ring.. usually out of a piece of tube or two... I then braze that on.. 😊👍 If your not confident in hammering on an end, then I would turn off a few threads, so that the nut still screws in most of the way. 👍
Down And Out Customs do some guards. They're cool.

I've just ordered some stainless ones off Hitchcocks, (who are an Enfield dealer) it was the first website that came up, and they seemed the right size.. fingers crossed.. I didn't think about down and out, even though I was talking about them yesterday, when a guy came to pick up a bike from Sheffield. 🤦♂️

Really nice pipes and look neater on a race bike but by bending them inwards Norton actually increased the length of the pipe if it wasn't for the dynamo/timing case you could have a really tight bend like the yam at the top. Having said that though if it's for dyno testing and it doesn't have to look traditional I suppose you could actually have a tighter bend at the top anyway and sweep it in at the bottom like you have done already ??. I wish someone would give me bagfuls of jaffa's haha 😂
@glennstatham9602 ай бұрын
Obvious that you have the knowledge and the hands-on stuff to do almost anything that would earn a good wage, but you want to carry this tradition on. You may end up not wealthy, but the wealth of history and fabric of life you carry is priceless. Which won't pay rent.

Check this vid out the original shock didn't have a spring it's pneumatic so the pipe is further back than the one you had to copy ( ie it wraps around the back of the engine ) so this means the front of the can is further back and actually pointing towards the centre of the bike which means it's out of the way of the side panel. So not your fault. kzbin.info/www/bejne/n4Xbh5uhaLOJiqs

Hey Ben, Another bending masterclass . Those bends were more complicated than they looked. Get youself some masking tape and put it on the frame to protect the paint a bit more, maybe not too good for MIG but will help against the pipe touching as you put it though .

With the head off the threads could be re-cut and the nut could be built up with braze and then machined out and re threaded to suit the slightly smaller threads on the head

Sand bending is an art I learned from my father when I was about 12. He was an old school plumber and now, so am I. The propane is an excellent gas for this purpose, acetylene is too hot and dirty. But, as a licensed LPG fitter of nearly 50 years, the sight of those 30 odd kilo bottles in the middle of the shed is frightening. They should be outside and controlled by a proper regulator with a control cock in a convenient location. Sorry to sound like an old woman, but it has me shuddering at the possible consequences. Up to you. Great work, so good to see the art still going, the mandrel cheats have nothing on you.
