Our British Racing Green R reg 214 had its problems. The dreaded head gasket failure, a passenger side electric window which decided to fall out one day and a temperamental alarm which used to randomly go off sometimes when unlocking the car (surprisingly loud and intimidating GTFO of my way sounding horn TBF)… But it was still a really nice little car despite its issues. Comfy, quiet and a good looking little motor for it’s time, despite being a supermini. Still remember the reg of ours. R570 EJW. Sadly scrapped in 2006.

Your 1997 214 only lasted 9 years which was a short life. What caused its early demise? A few days ago, I spoke to a Belgian lady who had her diesel 200 for 21 years!

@@rallychamp2003 My dad sold it to a family friend…who decided to go driving the car with no tax or insurance. Impounded by the police, he never paid the fine within the 14 days to recover the car, so it was crushed. 😞 My dad was furious. 21 years is a good long time to have a car, she clearly looked after it and it gave her happy motoring. 😀

You know that the game is up when you rename your old Metro and try to present it as a new car. Would have done better upping the engineering and quality control and keeping the name!

Great cars, much underated and slagged off by the morons who no nothing about Rover. Only the equivalent Honda accord was as good to drive. Of course they were virtually identical under the skin.
@maxmaxwell21803 жыл бұрын
These little cars were actually really good, given their small dimensions, they were surprisingly roomy inside, quite quick and good handling and good economy. They were much better than some people would have you believe.
Love the way they show the designers illustrations which he probably spent months of effort on, only for them to go "fuck it! Change the name and put a new grill on it!"

3 star crash test may not be great now, but in 1996 it was right up there. As for it being smaller, that's why the 400 came out shortly after.

If ye ask me this really shoulda been the Metro replacement and been called the 100 series rather than the facelifted Metro in 1994. Real issue as others say is the old 200/400 was really in the Small family car Golf, R19 etc category and this version was really more in the superman class size wise. They pisitioned it completely wrong in the market but other than that really not alot wrong esp styling for its time against everythin else. 9bv the K Series had its issues but defo d8dnt deserve its reputation as a car. Maybe image was also a factor being a Rover.

I've had nearly 40 cars, ranging from a new Touareg down to a 50 quid Robin, I've got a 75 again now, the 25 is the best car i ever had, once you change the gasket it's fine,my father in law has it, it's still as stiff as new, unlike some "Good" cars people bang on about, worst car i had was an Audi 80, bag of shite, and the Touareg

@rallychamp20035 жыл бұрын
@@runforit420 When keeping to recommended maintenance, the K-series is a very reliable engine and also lightweight and very fuel efficient. The 1800 K-series was chosen by Lotus for their car (before they moved to Toyota engines).
@runforit4205 жыл бұрын
@rallychamp2003 You're correct. I was making more of the reference to the CVT, which was absolutely horrible from what I have heard, than the K-series four, which is reliable if maintained according to the maintenance schedule.

Ample rear legroom unless you have two giants in the front with seats pushed back, small boot, 3 star EuroNCAP rating.
@anthonyperkins75566 жыл бұрын
Driver's airbag OPTIONAL, DREADFUL crash performance, CRAMPED rear seats caused by fitting whapping huge seats in the front gobbling up the rear legroom, based on an 80's Metro floorpan and cobbled together. Woefully out of date then, sinfully obsolete now thanks to MG Rover going belly up in 2005.
@anthonyperkins75566 жыл бұрын
They did it on the cheap, using the old 80s floorpan, using the old metro plans to build and develop a brand new body, fish in the rover parts bins for whatever they could find, put the thing together and equip it with Rover 200 seats in the front which gobbled up the rear legroom and made it tight to sit for any length of time, and to add insult to injury, only for driver airbags to be available as an option and even then, with an airbag fitted it wasn't safe in a crash, gaining 1 EuroNCAP star for its crash safety with fatal leg torso ankle face and chest injuries in frontal impact, while the head never touched the airbag and rolled off hitting the door.....
