Are techs not able to just order a replacement board from Akai? Instead of an entire new device?
@grcomputertech413916 күн бұрын
Yes, on the keys 37 and mpc one+ these boards are more accessible due to the new design but not so much on the rest of the line of mpcs since the rock2som's are not available for purchase anywhere, but imagine all the e-waste thats causing plus once these things hit vintage status. Who knows if there will be replacements boards available. Also, you never know if someone has saved something important inside the emmc, and the only way to rescue is to fix the device.

I am no way as advanced as GR computer Tech, but practicing on other projects with my hot air and soldering,I have noticed, Kaptan Tape did not give sufficiant protection to surroundings, Alufoil is much better, I used the kitchen heavyduty, slightly thicker rolls, makes for great handling, plus you can mold it around parts or right in to tight spaces, a good flux gel is a must and also like you mention a good quality 60/40 leaded solder helps bring the temps way down. My MPC live is acting up, I dread another fail. Thanks for the Video, Amazing work you do!
@grcomputertech413917 күн бұрын
Thanks for the kind words. I hope to bring more videos. I have another type of mod planned but thats for some time in the future. As for kapton tape ive started using it a lot more now to cover up the apu plus adding some extra copper heatsinks to avoid killing the apu on the keys 37, mpc one + since these have the ram chips way too close to the apu.. ill implement some tinfoil as well for more protection.

Thank you so much for doing this pioneering work. The world needs to start reverse-engineering these ARM / Rockchip based music devices by InMusic/Numark, and eventually implement open-source versions. If you find the service repair manuals for Akai, Denon, etc please share.
@chrisjay302616 күн бұрын
Dont. The next stepup rockchip can use 32g ram but it is not compatible with the OS. The mpc already works fine. Just connect it to a computer.
@GeeXtreme_TV16 күн бұрын
There's already an open-source equivalent, Zynthian, which over time and with more contributors and programmers it will push what the MPC style of device can do. It's already running on a Pi 5 for example... but a built Zynthian is about the same price as an MPC Key 37 without a keyboard and without the support/polish of MPC app and desktop.
@marizuokereke734718 күн бұрын
Great work, as always. Have you considered using Kapton tape to shield sensitive components, like the APU? How did you re-ball the RAM chips that you originally removed from this board? (In order to put them into the other Key37)
@seanwieland976317 күн бұрын
Maybe a collab between this guy and DosDude1 are in order. 💯
@grcomputertech413917 күн бұрын
I used kapton tape on the new keys i ordered and gave to the customer to replace the one in the video. I also reballed those older ones and used them in the other keys. The keys in this video got preballed chips, the apu was pre balled as well. But i use a stencil to reball the ram chips if i ever need to but i try to avoid that of course.

Which could help with the longevity of the device as well as faster project loading for important projects/live sets that people may want to prioritize and send over to the emmc instead of one off quick sketch idea projects.

WOW!! That is an incredibly risky move. With that said, I'm glad you didn't toast your Force. I'm also happy for you about the fact that not only did you manage not to destroy your machine while doing the upgrade, but the upgrade itself actually WORKED!!! I was surprised the machine gave no errors and read the new ram chip with ease and without any issues. Bravo!!! Superb job on that, for real!!!!! Now, come over and do my original MPC X and my Force. Do my new MPC KEY-37 too. I'd definitely love for that to have 4GBs of ram, especially as portable as it is. Akai could've done this themselves if they wanted to, and they know it too. They're all about money and profits, just like any other business. I'm not hating on Akai. They gotta make their money too. Perfect example: Providing an option for MPC X owners to upgrade their MPC X to MPC X SE specs would be of no benefit to Akai because it would hinder MPC X SE sales.
