This song is about the frustrating experience of being in an unhappy and disconnected relationship. The singer reflects on his past life when he was "happy in the haze of a drunken hour", and then contrasts it with his miserable present reality. The song criticizes the other person in the relationship, acknowledging that she does not care whether the singer "lives or dies", and lamenting her emotional detachment. The singer questions why he even bothers putting effort into the relationship, when it's clear that the other person doesn't care. In the end, he recognizes the need to "naturally" escape this dead-end relationship.

you could probably get away with it by not playing the bass note on the low E string and if you are playing with a band, let the bassist play the note :-)
