OK, All our 450 broker transactions include an inspection and because that reveals the construction the seller often installs the stiffener kit preventatively . However, I understand that these inspections very rarely reveals a failure. This is just antidotal I admit but regardless, the issue does not affect the 440 model. My opinion is that a model with 1000 units in service has a reduced risk of undetected design faults compared to more limited production designs from builders having a fraction of the experience and resources of the Benetau Group. Performance boats, being more weight sensitive, have lower safety factors but there are not enough built nor sea miles accumulated to report failures. When they are detected the yards are usually out of business. So a long standing, goverment subsidized shipyard iterating a cruising design for decades while always leading best process methods seems a conservative choice compared to most options.

@@riskmore Ok with a 1000 units in service and as of 2021 there were 63 units with cracked bulkheads, possibly upwards of 100 today. That's 1 in 100 chance you'll have a cracked or broken bulkhead. Thats not very comforting. Then, if the boat didn't see much bluewater use, there hasn't been much strain on the bulkheads for the crack to develop. At $390k, thats a big gamble. A Canadian built PDQ Antares 44 like the 2005 model I had is way more bang for the buck and never have have structural problems.

Hi Bill, While the Parlay story and its hurricane damage is well known the issue is confined to the 450 hulls which succeed the 440. The Catamaran Company has been the largest Lagoon dealer in US for 24 years and our Multitech division is an authorized repair station installing a factory retrofit to serial numbers affected. The extent of the design flaw is well understood and we require an inspection on our broker boats as part of the sale in those comparatively few affected serial numbers on units produced between 2010 and 2012 . While this does not apply to any 440 the factory response shows the value of purchasing from the biggest boat builder in the world and a model with over 1,000 hulls from 2014 to 2021. Having that amount of delivery experience allow a builder to get feedback and quickly make design changes like the forward passageway frame reinforcement made in 2012.

It's a common sales tactic. They get you to call in or email in so they can engage with you. If they share the price in the description and the price is too high, you might not even call in. If you call, get the answer, and then say "it's out of my budget," they can consult with you to find a different boat that'll meet your needs. I'm a sales guy in a different industry. It's all the same. :)
