A furniture manufacturer in town was having an open house and one thing that struck me as interesting was how they made turned spindles. In the factory was a special department that sharpened the saw blades and other cutters. The fellow in the department was setting up this huge rotary tool that would plunge into a wood blank and make the entire spindle in one go. There were multiple blades and some small form tools all mounted in this big steel thing and the big steel thing would go in a giant machine. The big steel thing would spin along its length maybe 1000 or 2000 rpm and it would be noisy when it would start chewing away at a piece of wood. But they could probably make a new spindle in a couple of minutes.

You'd think that the guys doing it professionally would have some more impressive fixture, than just four plastic crates 🤔
