Wonderful explanation of The School of Athens. Well spoken with just the right speech, clarity and enunciation. Simple at the same time deep. I only wish it was longer. Thank you very much.

The Bowler Hat figures personify anonymity. A Magritte "Bowler Man" wears black jacket and hat (like armor) to protect his privacy and ensure his identity remains unknown.

Hello! I’m a Ap Art History student (as well as a artist who’s favorite periods were Renaissance/Baroque), and this video helped me understand more about the art during that period, as well as the significance of group portraits! I love the way you teach, you remind me of my teacher as well. I am a few years late from when this video was uploaded, but I really appreciated this, keep on grinding 💪💪💪

I guess to me those paintings make the figure very eerie, foreboding, and unsettling... Maybe it was intended to communicate to people like those who wore that costume for work everyday, to communicate the feeling of creepy power they have over others (over all the others with less social status than them, for example...) Also just makes me think of Harold Pinter plays! Making the seemingly ordinary super creepy :)

thank you for this videos im learning a lot of things from you! i have question :) What does the dead horse symbol mean, could you please explain?
@TheWanderingArtHistorian
@TheWanderingArtHistorian Жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching! You ask a great question, too. When I think about horses depicted in art, I am often reminded of the many battle or war scenes with strong leaders (often historical figures) atop large muscular horses. Sometimes we even see members of royalty riding horses in art. One could interpret the horse as a powerful beast (that first must be tamed by humans) and then ridden into war also carrying powerful humans. Majesty, power, strength, privilege, royalty, military prowess - all those things could be associated with horses in art. So, if the horse is depicted at dead, that could suggest/imply a loss or an ending to those qualities. If you would like to do more research on this topic, here's a great article for you to check out... arthive.com/encyclopedia/52~The_horse_as_a_symbolic_image_in_art

☕ what category would Viking or Celtic art go under?
@TheWanderingArtHistorian
@TheWanderingArtHistorian 2 жыл бұрын
This is an EXCELLENT question! When dating artwork, regardless of culture or location, we still designate time periods like the Middle Ages (approximately 400-ish - 1400-ish), the Renaissance (1400-ish - 1500's), the Baroque period (1600's & 1700's-ish), etc. All of these dates are rough estimates. When you are looking at art or architecture or tools that predate the Middle Ages, a lot of that falls into Prehistory. For example, the artwork found at Newgrange in Ireland (the triple spiral in particular) is often associated with the Celts. However, Newgrange dates from 3000bce - 2000bce making it Neolithic (Stone Age) and predating the Celts! Thank you for your question - I hope this helps!

Thank you for this video… I was just wondering in the last painting why the father is painted in red? As He is the ultimate devine.. shouldn’t He be painted in blue?
@TheWanderingArtHistorian
@TheWanderingArtHistorian 2 жыл бұрын
You make an excellent observation. Mary is considered the Queen of Heaven and the Mother of God. I think the artistic choice to depict God (the Father) in a red cloak is made to keep the eye of the viewer moving UP through the painting. We start on earth with the two saints. Then we proceed UP to Mary and then UP to God the Father. The color red helps guide the viewer's eye UP. This probably suggests the artist (on behalf of The Church) is encouraging whomever looks at the painting to look UP to Mary who will then help us move UP spiritually to God the Father. Thank you for watching!

I am not sure if you are familiar with mesopotamian myth about Gilgamesh? Gilgamesh, after the death of his best friend Enkidu, sets out looking for the eternity plant... after a long journey filled with hardship.. he finally gets the plant... but then a creature steals it from him and eat it... can you guess the creature? If you think of snake you would be absolutely right!

Yes, the artist painted Plato & Aristotle facing each other w/ Plato point towards the heavens & Aristotle pointing towards the earth. However, Raphael painted Plato to look like Da Vinci - it is almost like Leonardo cosplaying as (or in the guise of) the famous philosopher. This could have been done to honor/celebrate Leonardo as being just as powerful/influential as Plato or to suggest that Leonardo's own philosophies aligned w/ the great Plato's. Excellent observation! Thank you for watching!
