Please forgive my ignorance, but I’m really curious about the sound I hear during some of the verses - it sounds like birds chirping. Is that a setting or a feature of this particular organ? I’m not an organist and I have never heard it before. I love all of your playlists. Awesome job. Thanks!

That is a great question! It is called a Vogelgesang, which comes into English as 'bird song.' A vogelgesang is typically a pipe about an inch in length and partially submerged in an approximate two-inch by two-inch bath of water. When activated, the pipe makes various bird sounds depending on how far you pull the stop out. Here is a link to a KZbin Short I did about a year ago where I explain this further and provide a brief demonstration: kzbin.infoTXXY22yPdSE. Additionally, this link shows the Vogelgesang employed on the hymn 'Come, Holy Ghost, God and Lord' LSB#497: kzbin.infoJ50zNmIgz3M. Typically, I use this stop mainly for Christmas Eve and the Sundays of Christmas, as well as on hymns that reference the Holy Spirit. Subsequently, other solo organ repertoire could also put the Vogelgesang to good use =) Soli Deo Gloria!! Jeff

It certainly is a great hymn! TLH is truly a treasure trove of hymns. So, too, if you have never had a chance to look at Walther's Hymnal, which Carver recently translated, I would highly recommend that also. Both are phenomenal to have in your musical and home library. Not many know the hymn 'When Rome Had Shrouded Earth In Night' from the Evangelical Lutheran Hymn-Book; sadly, it never made it into any LCMS hymnals after that. However, my home congregation still sings it as the processional hymn every Reformation Sunday =) Soli Deo Gloria!! Jeff

Amen! 😊 That is a really good question 🤔 Generally, when seminary is in session your first two years, you are expected to help with services at your assigned congregation by assisting in a variety of ways. Most times that is teaching, preaching, assisting with the distribution and doing the readings for instance. However, I think there was about two Sundays in two years that I did serve as organist due to a need by the congregation. If you want further clarification, you can certainly give the seminary a call and I'm sure they could give you the official practice 😊
