Responsibility is somehow intrinsically related to opportunity, and both are a foundation of growth

I think it's harder and harder for people to see themselves as having a future, and without a future, what space do you have for any kind of teleology?

On my second listen here, I'm reminded of that factoid about what happens if you relieve the butterfly of the struggle of coming out of the chrysalis

Lol - there is a tension, maybe even a paradox between the parties in the statement: "we aren't developing individuals" - I'm wondering if there's some thing fruitful and even constructive inside of that contrast?

Children need help developing to that point. The concept of an individual took hundreds, if not thousands of years to develop and matters most when operating within a society.

@ I understand there's history of distinguishing childhood something unto itself as well… I came across a book titled "the invention of childhood", and from what I can remember from the synopsis, the traces the modern sense of it back to the spread of literacy after the printing press (although I would be curious to read exactly how it accounts for the rest of history elsewhere!) Neoteny, and the notion of the extended womb/cultural transmission in childhood development also underlies what you're saying
