Great documentary. Too bad about the atrocious audio and cropped video frame. I've looked for a better version of this but no luck.

Politics is violence. The FDR/US had no business provoking Germany and Japan and thus no right to be in the war that followed the provocations. Likewise, Wilson provoked Germany prior to entry to WW I.

How could they say the war was worth it? It was a necessary war to stop Hitler and the NAZI’s but no war is worth the loss of life and treasure and there is nothing gallant or glamorous about war!

This is an old video, so since time has passed since the original video, has the original mission of the last u-boat been determined yet?

This comment is made after 10 years on the Internet. The U-boot was salvaged, but there is still question about its cargo? So what happened to the cargo? No mention of having made any landing to offload ....

I remember back in the early to mid 1990s going on a full external/internal guided tour of U-534 (pre-cutting up / vandalisation) when it was still in one piece next to the "Spillers" flour mills at Wallasey, Merseyside, UK. The whole trip was a fascinating experience (Not many people can say nowadays that they have stood on the bridge of a type IX U-boat... well "health and safety" hadn't yet reached the ridiculous lengths it has nowadays) and I still drink out of the U-534 mug that I bought from the on-site giftshop "portacabin". One thing that sticks in my mind in particular was that when we were inside the boat making our way through each of the internal compartments, was that although the vast majority of the internals of the sub were either rusted or rust stained, in each compartment there was a clearly defined area near the compartment roof above which the original paint finish could be clearly seen, I realised it was where trapped air had prevented the seawater from corroding the paint & steel. The sudden realisation of its significance was chilling as it was a very real visualisation of the awful reality for hundreds of thousands of men who had been trapped onboard sinking vessels during the war, who must have fought for their last, panic striken, dying breaths with their faces pressed into such air pockets, before they finally succumbed to hypothermia, or more likely asphyxia.... such was the grim reality of war away from the recruiting posters and blaring fanfares. I remember signing a local petition to stop U-534 being cut up, but as you can see it had the effect that most petitions have, I.E none. But there is currently a plan to restore U-534 into a complete U-boat once again (after the criminal damage done to it by Merseyside county council) and to house it indoors to prevent any further deterioriation to it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/f5isqIRtZ9KSeZo I'm just sorry I no longer live in Liverpool as I would be offering my services in whatever capacity was needed to take part in such a worthy undertaking. I sincerely wish them all the best.

Germany has no say whether a u-boat can be raised or salvaged. It doesn’t belong to the current German government , it was property of the Third Reich government and that government no longer exists . Also Germany is not allowed to own submarines period so it doesn’t belong to them.

The narrator twice mention that technology had caught up to the U-Boat , but as the war ended the Nazi u boat R& D had come up with a new twist . They rubber coated the outer skin & it became invisible to sonar . Check out U-480

@walterkronkitesleftshoe6684 7 ай бұрын
Hardly "invisible". The "Tarnmatte" covering REDUCED the sub's acoustic signature and asdic return but hardly made it invisible.... and remember allied ASDIC (sonar) technology was also advancing at an incredible rate.

@@walterkronkitesleftshoe6684 Interesting . Years ago I saw a doc on the Bismark and they were talking about how advanced the Germans were, Now mind you the ship was launched in 1939 there was a computer guidance system on board that was so advanced they could hurl a 1 ton Artillery ordinance into a tennis court 25 miles away . When I heard that my jaw dropped
@walterkronkitesleftshoe6684
@walterkronkitesleftshoe6684 7 ай бұрын
@@madmanmechanic8847 There is always a LOT of hype about Germany technical prowess. I'm NOT saying they were "technological cavemen" they clearly weren't BUT there has ALWAYS been a lot of hyperbole spoken about their abilities. For instance the program you watched saying "They could land a 15" shell on a tennis court 25 miles away" is COMPLETE media nonsense. I'll bore you for a minute but the truth in that regard is given by the German's OWN WW2 naval gunnery evaluation command (Artillerie Versuchs Kommando für Shiff - AVKS). Which for example states that at 17000 yards (that's 9½ miles) a single 15" shell from Bismarck had a 50% chance of landing within a circle of 660ft in diameter. 25 miles (44,000 yards) was the EXTREME range of the guns in special land based mountings, and would have been lucky to hit the town district where the "tennis court" was. As you can see they were good but NOT as good as that TV program suggests. All the best "Madman" !!!

My Father was a Dutch engineer in Bergen forced by the German Nazis in 44’45. He told that he sabotaged the Diesel Engines. They ran for about two weeks and than the pistonrings cracked and the engine failed. If that is true we don’t know. What we know is that he fell in love with a young Norwegian girl and he took her back to Holland in june 1945! And I am a son born out of them. I am 57 now and it is time to know the truth about it. How the hell did my dad travelled to Bergen Norway….

When asked, after visiting the graves in Normandy, if the war was worth it all, the surviving crew member of the Liberator replied “Absolutely.” This point should be understood by all of the peaceniks that believe nothing is worth war, uttered by a veteran forced to fight but proud to have done so. Tyranny must not be allowed to survive no matter the cost.

The sub was NOT cut up by the Warship presevation trust. The WPT was forced to fold after the land it was situated on was sold to property developers, and they couldn't afford to move the sub, and so it was handed over to Merseyside transport authority and it was THEY who cut it up. On a happier note there is a project afoot to rebuild U-534 and to house it indoors to prevent any firther deterioration. kzbin.info/www/bejne/f5isqIRtZ9KSeZo
