Hi, great video. Just wonderting do you need to keep backing the boat to hold? Or just drift?
@otklfnz14 күн бұрын
Hi mate thank you. Great question. You don’t have to keep backing the boat up, but it has benefit when fishing this deep that when you find the fish you try stay on them. When your jig weight vs line diameter enables you to stay vertical you can indeed just drift along. Lots of risk by drifting, when the bottom structure varies in depth you can get snagged easily.

Whos is the boat looks awesome is there actually a bunk under the wheel? Do you have to watch for spiking the pontoons?
@otklfnz18 күн бұрын
Hey mate, yeah Mike the skipper is a good friend of mine. The boat indeed has a bed under the console, toilet also. Yes have to be aware of fish spikes, but the pontoons are pretty thick so it’s not too bad. we strictly use a landing net anyway. Its is multi section pontoons also so if one lost pressure its no biggie.

Ain't this a beautiful spot just a few minutes drive from the CBD, and a bit like turning the clock back a couple of decades. It's a great walk out there under the trees. The boat club jetty is a good spot for bait with a cast net or just jigging, and I've had some good snapper off there as well. The club don't seem to mind me parking near the ramp on weeknights. Something big busted me last time I was up there, stingray probably. We've tried lures, soft plastics, cut baits, but live baits seem to go best. I dragged a lot of driftwood out of that gut but I expect there will be more by the time I get there next. I've seen guys in waders up to their chests casting off that shell bank near 2km out from where you were. I don't often go out even as far as you did, usually I just hook left at the first row of macrocarpa, about 2 minutes from the car. Follow the trees out to the little point there opposite the motor camp. A muddy shell bank in front of you, easy to clear away any rocks and driftwood, 20 m to the channel, and it's narrow there. Good shade under the trees. We have stayed the night there and it's good to have a clear line of sight to the carpark, and not far to nip back for gear or cook up a feed in the reserve :)
@otklfnz4 ай бұрын
Beautiful place mate. Trees still come through after every storm 😂. Theres actually a new bridge getting built across the river close to the club, so we’re getting a bit of silt at the moment. Hopefully they catch all the rubbish from the “run-off” once the road is open.🫣 I have seen Orca up here chasing stingray into the shallow, like you say, it’s like turning the clock back a little.👌🏽
@edwardtupper63744 ай бұрын
@@otklfnz oh yeah the multi million dollar two lane bridge, that's futureproofing the city lol. Orca! I had a run in with Opha the sea leopard on Henderson Creek, my mate says she would have weighed more than the both of us, glad she didn't decide to use the boat for a chew toy.

Awesome video! Used to do a lot of shore fishing in Auckland 30 yrs ago when I was a kid. Island bay, Birkenhead wharf, takapuna bch off the rocks. I'd make lures out of spoon handles. Never got anything on them though. Only with bait. Where's your spot? I feel like I recognize the cliffs in the background on the right hand side of the bay. Thanks again for the video. Really love the attention to detail on the filming.
@otklfnz5 ай бұрын
Thank you bro. A spoon handle is a great idea, some people may use the spoon, but the handle is more like a Jig.👌🏽I may actually give that a crack. I’ve been trying the same areas you mention here, up to east coast bays as far as Wenderholme. I would typically bait fish too from the land, but I am a lure fisherman on the boat. I enjoy casting small jigs up to 30g into the “wash” which made me think I could actually do this from the “shore”. I tried my softbait gear but could not get the distance to hit the channels and holes, so the specific shore jigging rods have really changed the game. Am starting to adapt pendulum casting but it is scary 😂. I look forward to doing more of this very soon. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. Appreciate it allot 🤙🏾
