I wonder whether the initial problem was “stiction”-early Seagates were prone to it. The head’s slider would stick to the media surface. With old ST506-MFM drives, a deep media scan (repeated read-write-verify of every sector) to detect new bad sectors, with marking of the locations as unusable (adding them to the factory defects table) will allow the drive to be used with close monitoring-rather than just discarding it. That said, even at their best, these linear stepper actuator Miniscribe units, like the 3650 weren’t very reliable to begin with. Norton Commander is an excellent file manager! Enjoyed the watch :-)

"Linux" is actually pronounced as "LIN (short) * uhks (schwa)" even though it only has one n, because it's based on its inventor's first name, Linus Torvalds, which name doesn't follow English pronunciation rules (his name is like "LIN (short) * uhs (schwa)," as if they were to be spelled as "Linnux" and "Linnus" (instead of like Linus from the Peanuts Gang or Linus Sebastian from Tech Tips here).

Cool. What is the data bit rate? Meaning how many bits per second are encoded in the audio stream? Would 11 KHz be enough to fully recover the underlying data?

If I remember correctly, it was raw capture with all data in it, so whatever rate it was playing at, could be considered the data rate.

so you had to initialize the sound canvas in CM-64 mode before playing? or did you init All, GM or GS? Its weird how channel 1 was used tho, i thought mt32 didnt use channel 1

Sounds like it is just shuffling data around...check the SMART data at times, just to be sure it's ok. I dropped my 1TB WD green drive once and after plugging it in it sat there grinding away to itself for ages, but it came back right as rain with no data loss. WD make great hard drives!
