10 years too late with this comment, but I would put the responsibility of this mess almost entirely on the professor. I'm a teacher myself and have had annoying/infuriating, and sometimes outright rude students along the way. Of course they wouldn't be in the right, but I wouldn't see how that would justify my having an outburst like this man did. As the grown up with experience, the teacher has to try and find a better way of dealing with such situations. Even if the girl did something to distract him, he was completely in the wrong for shouting at her the way he did. Once anyone starts doing that, they deserve no respect. Kudos to the girl for standing her ground. For those making this a gender issue, whether you are a boy or a girl student, I think you should stand your ground - preferably politely, but can't imagine how anyone can stay polite when some explodes like this and comes charging at you. Everyone deserves respect till they prove with their actions that they deserve none.
