this is funny cause it would be historically accurate in the sense the romans were better with swords and shields whereas spartans were better with spears and shields. but both were forces to be reckoned with!!

I feel that the problem with Rome 2's animations are that all sword and board units use the same ones. The Spartan is using a kopis, which similar to the falcata, would've been used more so as an over the head chopper, the forward curve bending over the shield and into the helmet or face of the Roman. There was an account from a retired legionary who faced a similar sword in Spain, and it permanently disfigured his face, cutting out an eye and piercing his helmet. Romans on the other hand would have been more inclined to use their shields as a weapon, punching with them, ramming with the full weight of their bodies, and using the full length of the shield to smash down on sandal wearing opponents' feet.
