After Spain moved its focus to the mainland Hispaniola was ignored and fell into poverty. This lead to the Dominicans trading with French pirates on the island of Tortuga, a small island above current day haiti. The Spanish would raid that island but the pirates would return. Eventually the Spanish crown ordered the burning of all the villages and towns of the western side of Hispaniola to force the population closer to the capital. This is called the Devastation of Osario. This plan backfired and lead to the French getting a foot hold on the island. After many battles Spain and France signed a treaty then the French began to import hundreds of thousands of African slaves to the western side of the island. Now known as Haiti.
