If you put the end of your wooden spoon in the oil and you get bubbles coming out of the spoon the oil is hot enough.

I just googled it and it's just a couple of little things and they all look to be food except for two sharpies and a microfiber cloth. The gal got a granola bar, a kit Kat bar, a little bottle of some kind of juice... It was nothing special.
