How you liking it? I got back into cycling buying the ozark explorer and was thinking about getting a 105 group set new wheels etc. We have trails here well paved. Should I get a new bike like urs vs. going down the upgrade path 😂
@MASHLEY6914 сағат бұрын
@@akumarification hey there. I’m really enjoying the new bike. I upgraded my Ozark pretty heavily, to make it as close to a road bike as possible. I pieced mine together with parts I either had already or things I got used or a great deal. It can be worth it if you enjoy tinkering with things. I do enjoy the upgrading and building of bikes. Especially the budget bikes. But in the long run if you can afford it, I find it’s always best to get the best bike your budget allows and go from there. Sometimes you buy a cheap bike and when you’re all done upgrading you have so much invested that you could have got something “better”. It’s all about what your end goal is. The ozark bikes are a great platform to get started and spend money over time.

Thanks for the response. I may get the Emonda AL if I can find one at a decent deal around Christmas. I dont really have bike mechanic skills, but see ur point as ozark being a great jump-off platform into cycling and to build up the necessary maintenance skills.

Nice video, how is the ride, is 100mm travel good enough. I am thinking of getting this same fork for my 29". Can this fork travel be increased to 120mm? I saw online that some say we can take out the spacers inside the fork to make it 120mm travel but some say not recommended. Do you have any inputs on that? thanks
@MASHLEY6919 күн бұрын
Thanks...100mm can be good enough, for light trail and most cross country riding. . . however if you're going to be riding more aggressive trails more travel might be better. I think 120mm is a sweetspot for most riding. . . I have the Roscoe which has 140 of front travel and I hardly ever use all that fork. I am not sure if this particular model can be adjusted with spacers and stuff. . . I think this one is just a straight 100mm. Usually more premium forks have that feature where you can adjust the travel with spacers or tokens.

Now that you're deep into road bike territory I have some wisdom to share. If you're going to keep riding rough surfaces like shoulders and bike paths you're going to want wider tires. 25s are good for the smoothest surfaces and help keep the bike weight down while its on the sales floor. You should consider getting some 30s at least but probably 32c is the sweet spot. Note that if your tire is wider than your rim, the aero characteristics of the rim itself wont matter as much, because its in the shadow of the tire when traveling forward. So you could theoretically lose speed by going to 32s WITHOUT also getting a wider rim. If you look at pictures of 25c vs 30c vs 32c, you'll notice that as the tire gets wider, so does the rim. So even though the tire and rim are bigger, they're still the right shape. If your wheels look like mtb/gravel wheels with the tire ballooning way out passed the rim, you will have worse performance at 13+mph on level ground. But once you've landed on the tire size you want you should consider a tire made of faster rubber. You'll have less puncture protection, but the difference in speed can be hard to believe. Continental GP5000 STR are the fastest tires I have ever ridden. Everyone reading this far should use the Silca Tire Pressure Calculator. It will give you the exact psi for the most efficient tires possible. Everyone rides at too high of pressure, because old school riders also used too much pressure.

As the owner of a Trek 820, this is a very uninformed comment. The 820 hasn’t been updated since the early 2000’s. The 820 still uses a cheap steel frame (not a quality Cr-mo steel), crap fork, 3x7 drivetrain with Freewheel rear wheel. They are so crappy, in fact, that when I was working at a Trek shop, we wouldn’t stock them as they were so bad.
