Even being an anime and a slice of life, I'm amazed by how they portrayed both Ryu and Kotaro's grief by their points of view. Ryu is a teenager who knows he now has to take care of his little brother, so he tries to suppress his sadness to be brave and strong for Kotaro, but in the episode Kotaro gets sick, he is finally overwhelmed by the fact he lost his parents and cries. Kotaro is a baby. He doesn't fully understand his parents died, but he is very aware he probably won't see them again, so he is very attached to his closest family member, that is why he suffers so much about being separated from Ryu, cause he might feel he will also go away.. although it's just fictional, I love it when people can pass so much with so little in their animes/books/movies...
