Father, thank you so much for these videos. I hope you have a way to see my comment all these years later. I am in my novitiate as an oblate novice with the Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles in Gower, MO and your series here on the Benedictine spirituality is so helpful for me as a guide. I am so grateful for the wisdom God has given you on this matter to share with us here - I pray that more people may find these videos and learn from them!

Why is it that Roman Catholics put before the faithful extreme forms of ice humanity that which we used to call part soldier part nun. Why is it NOW that we bring forth the sainthood of Dorothy Day?

Thank you Sohrab Ahmari for your questions and your brilliant approach to asking, thinking, and writing a book on these questions. I love your beginning with gratitude for your wife and your family beginning with the birth of your son. Your strategic approach to individual autonomy and the boundaries of our cultures is thought provoking especially reminding us about dismissing intellectual snobbery. What is true? and what is the role of play? are two essential questions you raise.Your discussion of why God wants us to play and why our actions are significant seems to be explained for their own sake while propitiating the Devine. During these pandemic times, we are also challenged with racism in America, and we need to play and take action especially with our Black brothers and sisters to create social justice if our democracy is to survive. Your prophetic messages for our time challenges us to engage in thought, rest, and play. As you stated, playless societies do not give God His rest and thus, we do not rest or give others rest as we ought to on the Sabbath. We need to unplug as the boundaries are blurred. We are all looking for a way forward so how can we develop the internal freedom to play? What role should the Sabbath play in our lives since the dissolving barriers of time and days of the week during this pandemic? I fear that we have become less religious by not being able to attend mass and receive the Holy Eucharist although I am reading the daily mass and meditation in the Magnificat. How do we shape our lives socially, politically, economically, and liturgically as our times are accelerating the space of dissolving barriers? What role does time play in our cultures? What about our children and grandchildren who need time with God? I look forward to our live discussion on June 20th. Thank you, Cheryl McCarthy

Fr. Wetta, your series is wonderful. I especially loved the one on the dangers of grumbling. Would you consider elaborating on your take on The Benedict Option? Thank you and blessed Eastertide!

Glad you found it helpful! I was wondering whether I should edit that bit out because I'm not sure I want to get in the middle of this particular argument in a public and permanent way. I'm willing to have my mind changed on this, but among other things, I don't think Dreher is a vary reliable source. A monk of my own house argued it best in the following article: portsmouthinstitute.org/how-benedictine-is-the-benedict-option/

The flippant delivery here is most unfortunate. I find Father Wetta very condescending and recommend he take a hard look at how he is coming across here.

I most certainly will, Mr. Makin. That's pretty much the exact opposite of what I intended, so it is good for me to hear. One of our old monks likes to say, "Your brothers are there to point out the spinach between your teeth." So I appreciate you taking the time to let me know how I appear to others. I'll pray over this.
