Peace mediation in times of radical uncertainty is an increasingly complex and critical endeavor. In a world marked by shifting power dynamics, unpredictable conflicts, and the rapid pace of change, traditional approaches to conflict resolution often fall short. Radical uncertainty calls for adaptive, multi-dimensional strategies that can address both the immediate and long-term challenges faced by conflict-ridden societies. Mediators today must navigate a landscape where old assumptions no longer apply and where new challenges, such as climate change, economic instability, and the influence of digital technology, intersect with traditional conflict drivers. This requires not just skill in negotiation and diplomacy, but also an in-depth understanding of the underlying social, political, and environmental factors contributing to conflict. Moreover, peace mediation must be inclusive, bringing diverse voices to the table to ensure that all stakeholders are represented, particularly those who have historically been marginalized. This inclusivity fosters a sense of ownership and legitimacy in the peace process, which is crucial for long-term stability. Finally, in times of radical uncertainty, flexibility and resilience are key. Mediation efforts must be able to pivot and evolve in response to changing circumstances, emphasizing collaborative problem-solving over rigid, one-size-fits-all solutions. Peacebuilders who can operate effectively under these conditions are those who combine deep knowledge with the ability to build trust, inspire cooperation, and remain adaptive in the face of ever-changing challenges.

Investor-state arbitration (ISA) is a mechanism that allows investors to sue governments for alleged violations of investment agreements. It is designed to protect investors against actions that might undermine their investments, such as expropriation, discrimination, or unfair treatment. While ISA can provide a vital avenue for ensuring that foreign investors are treated fairly and equitably, it has also been the subject of significant criticism. One of the main concerns is that ISA can undermine national sovereignty by allowing corporations to challenge public policy decisions that prioritize environmental protection, human rights, or public health. Critics argue that this can lead to a chilling effect where governments hesitate to implement regulations that might be viewed as potentially infringing on investor profits, even when such measures are in the public interest. Moreover, the process can be opaque and disproportionately favor investors due to the power dynamics between multinational corporations and states, often disadvantaging smaller or developing countries that may lack the resources to defend themselves effectively. Reform efforts are ongoing, with some suggesting the creation of more balanced systems like multilateral investment courts that could offer greater transparency and fairness. Ultimately, while ISA has its place in promoting international investment, its structure and implementation need to be reconsidered to ensure that it supports sustainable development and the interests of all stakeholders involved, not just those of powerful investors.

Shaping Africa's future requires a deep commitment to social justice and the protection of labor rights, as these are foundational to achieving equitable development and fostering economic growth that benefits all. Across the continent, millions of workers, especially in informal sectors, face exploitation, unsafe working conditions, and inadequate pay, perpetuating cycles of poverty and inequality. Addressing these issues is not only a moral imperative but also essential for sustainable development. Labor rights must be protected through stronger legislation, effective enforcement mechanisms, and active promotion of fair wages, safe working environments, and the right to organize. Social justice on the continent also means tackling systemic inequalities, including gender, racial, and ethnic discrimination, and ensuring that marginalized communities have access to decent work opportunities and social protections. Africa's future will be shaped by the ability to ensure that economic growth translates into tangible improvements in the lives of ordinary people. This requires a concerted effort to prioritize social justice, uphold labor rights, and foster an inclusive economy where all citizens can thrive. Empowering workers and ensuring dignity in the workplace is crucial for building a more just and prosperous Africa."

The climate emergency demands a new approach to humanitarian ethics, one that acknowledges the urgency of the crisis while prioritizing justice, equity, and accountability. As the impacts of climate change disproportionately affect vulnerable populations, particularly in the Global South, there is an ethical imperative to address the power imbalances that often accompany international aid and climate response efforts. A key concern in this context is 'ethics dumping' the practice of imposing harmful research or policy experiments on less-resourced communities without proper consent, oversight, or consideration for their cultural, social, and environmental contexts. New humanitarian ethics must challenge this exploitation and ensure that interventions are not just driven by the interests of powerful nations or corporations, but are genuinely informed by the needs and rights of affected communities. This means prioritizing local knowledge, ensuring community participation in decision-making, and preventing the imposition of solutions that may exacerbate existing inequalities or cause unintended harm. Furthermore, this ethical framework should focus on sustainability and long-term empowerment, avoiding short-term solutions that could compromise future generations. By integrating justice and inclusivity into climate action, we can move towards a humanitarian response that is both ethical and effective, placing people and the planet at the center of our global climate strategy.

While some may question whether international law is dead, the reality is more nuanced. International law continues to evolve, despite facing significant challenges. Global issues such as climate change, human rights abuses, armed conflicts, and economic inequalities reveal both the strengths and limitations of current legal frameworks. The growing tension between state sovereignty and international obligations, especially in a world of shifting power dynamics, often raises doubts about the effectiveness of international law in enforcing accountability and maintaining order. However, international law remains a vital tool for diplomacy, peacekeeping, and establishing norms for global cooperation. Its institutions, such as the United Nations and the International Criminal Court, continue to play important roles, even if they sometimes fall short of their intended goals. The increasing emphasis on human rights, the protection of the environment, and transnational justice systems signals that international law is not stagnant, but adapting to contemporary challenges. Rather than being "dead," international law is in a phase of transformation. Its relevance depends on how it is reformed to better reflect the realities of global interconnectedness and power imbalances. For international law to thrive, it must evolve beyond outdated norms, strengthen enforcement mechanisms, and ensure that it is inclusive and responsive to the needs of all nations, particularly those most vulnerable to global injustices.

Lebanon stands at a critical crossroads, grappling with a complex mix of political, economic, and social crises that threaten its stability and future. Decades of sectarian divisions, coupled with external influences, have left the country mired in systemic corruption, economic collapse, and an unprecedented refugee crisis. The political gridlock, characterized by power-sharing arrangements that prioritize sectarian interests over national unity, continues to exacerbate Lebanon’s challenges. Yet, amid this turmoil, there is a glimmer of hope. The resilience of the Lebanese people, especially youth-led movements advocating for reform and transparency, is a testament to the potential for change. Lebanon’s future stability hinges on the ability to forge a new political paradigm, one that moves beyond sectarian divisions and prioritizes national interests, justice, and equitable economic opportunities. For Lebanon to navigate this crossroads successfully, it must embrace comprehensive reforms, engage in meaningful dialogue, and build strong, independent institutions that can resist both internal and external pressures. The international community’s role in supporting Lebanon’s recovery must be rooted in empowering its people, rather than reinforcing a political system that has repeatedly failed them. Ultimately, the future of Lebanon depends on its ability to reconcile its past struggles with the aspirations of a more united, stable, and prosperous future.

The Public Law of Europe has often been a tool through which African sovereignty has been undermined, particularly during and after the colonial era. European legal frameworks imposed on African states disregarded local traditions, governance systems, and the principle of self-determination. While international law has evolved to recognize state sovereignty, the ongoing influence of European institutions and legal norms continues to shape African political and economic landscapes, sometimes to the detriment of true independence. In contrast, the Public Law of Africa, as embodied by the African Union (AU), offers a framework for promoting continental unity, protecting individual freedoms, and advancing collective self-realization. However, achieving full sovereignty and self-determination requires more than just legal frameworks. The ongoing denial of African sovereignty, influenced by external pressures and internal challenges, hinders the true independence and empowerment of African nations. To address these issues, it is crucial to advocate for a more equitable global legal order one that respects both African sovereignty and the rights of African peoples. This means strengthening African legal institutions, empowering youth, and ensuring that African voices are central in shaping global governance. By fostering inclusive systems, promoting grassroots participation, and supporting youth-led initiatives, the continent can move toward a future where sovereignty is genuinely realized, and the potential of African individuals and nations is fully unlocked.

Youth hold the transformative power to shape a better future by raising their voices and taking action for change. With their energy, creativity, and adaptability, young people are at the forefront of movements advocating for social justice, climate action, and technological innovation. Their ability to challenge outdated norms and propose fresh solutions is crucial in tackling global challenges. Empowering youth means providing access to education, resources, and platforms where their ideas can thrive. It also requires creating inclusive systems that value their contributions and foster intergenerational collaboration. By supporting youth-led initiatives and amplifying their voices, societies can unlock immense potential, lifting not just individual futures but the prospects of entire communities and nations. When the power of youth is harnessed, lasting change becomes not just a possibility, but a reality.

The Public Law of Africa, as embodied by the African Union (AU), plays a pivotal role in advancing the self-realization of African individuals and peoples. By fostering continental unity and promoting shared values, the AU provides a framework for collective progress while respecting diverse cultures and traditions. The African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights exemplifies this commitment by protecting both individual freedoms and collective rights, including self-determination and access to development. However, achieving self-realization requires addressing persistent challenges, such as governance deficits, socio-economic inequalities, and external interferences. The AU must strengthen mechanisms to hold member states accountable for upholding human rights and the rule of law while empowering grassroots participation. By aligning public law with the aspirations of African individuals and communities, the AU can drive transformative change, ensuring that all Africans can achieve their full potential within a just and equitable system.

The reform of international law in the context of African statehood must address the historical and ongoing interference by external powers in African legal systems. These intrusions often undermine local governance structures, perpetuate dependency, and hinder the development of robust judicial institutions. Additionally, external actors have at times supported rogue leaders, enabling them to manipulate legal systems and subvert justice to maintain power. Such interference compromises sovereignty and weakens the rule of law. A reformed international legal framework must safeguard African states from undue external influence while fostering accountability and empowering democratic governance. This includes addressing systemic inequities, respecting indigenous legal traditions, and ensuring mechanisms that deter both internal corruption and external exploitation. Justice on the continent can only thrive when rooted in fairness, sovereignty, and the true independence of its legal systems.

Donald Trump's economic policies had a significant impact on both the U.S. and the global economy, with some key aspects benefiting growth, employment, and international trade. His administration’s focus on tax cuts, particularly the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, aimed to stimulate economic growth by reducing corporate tax rates, encouraging businesses to invest and expand. This move led to a surge in corporate profits, stock market growth, and a record-low unemployment rate before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Trump's push for deregulation in key sectors, including energy, finance, and manufacturing, helped reduce business burdens, creating a more favorable environment for economic expansion. On the global stage, Trump's "America First" trade policies sought to renegotiate trade deals and reduce trade imbalances, which resonated with his supporters, especially in manufacturing sectors. His stance on China, through tariffs and trade negotiations, was seen as a strategic move to address long-standing trade disparities and protect American industries. While controversial, these policies were aimed at reinvigorating American manufacturing and reducing reliance on foreign supply chains. Overall, Trump’s economic strategies were aimed at creating a competitive, self-sustaining economy that placed American interests at the forefront, and in many areas, they succeeded in boosting domestic growth and fostering a more resilient economic framework.

From a rights-based approach, meritocracy, in its ideal form, may appear to align with principles of fairness and equality by rewarding individuals based on their abilities and achievements. However, in practice, it often overlooks the significant social inequities that shape people's opportunities, making it an insufficient framework for ensuring the common good. A truly just society must recognize that individuals are not born with equal access to resources, education, or opportunities, and thus, meritocracy in its traditional sense tends to perpetuate and even deepen these disparities. Social inequalities such as those based on race, class, gender, and disability place certain groups at a disadvantage from the outset, limiting their ability to succeed within a meritocratic system. Those who are born into poverty or face discrimination often lack the same access to quality education, healthcare, or social networks as those from privileged backgrounds. As a result, meritocracy fails to provide a level playing field, instead reinforcing the idea that success is solely a reflection of individual effort and ability, while ignoring the structural barriers that prevent equal access to opportunities. A rights-based approach calls for a more comprehensive understanding of justice, one that ensures all individuals have equal access to the conditions necessary for success, such as education, healthcare, and economic stability. Rather than focusing exclusively on individual merit, it advocates for systemic changes that address these inequalities and ensure that all people, regardless of their background, have the support and resources they need to thrive. To find the common good, society must move beyond the limitations of meritocracy and focus on creating an equitable system where rights, opportunities, and social protections are accessible to all. This approach values the dignity and rights of every individual, regardless of their starting point in life, and seeks to dismantle the social and economic inequalities that prevent many from achieving their full potential. Ultimately, a rights-based framework provides a more inclusive and just path toward the common good, one that ensures everyone can participate and benefit from society's resources and opportunities.

Relating philosophy to the world invites us to explore how abstract ideas and ethical frameworks shape our understanding of everyday life and global issues. Philosophy is not just a field of theoretical inquiry but a lens through which we interpret the complexities of human existence, societal structures, and our interactions with the environment. From ethics and politics to metaphysics and epistemology, philosophical concepts help us make sense of the world’s challenges whether they involve questions of justice, the nature of knowledge, or the meaning of life. In practical terms, philosophy offers tools for critically examining assumptions, recognizing biases, and fostering dialogue across different perspectives. For example, in the realm of politics, political philosophy questions the nature of power, authority, and justice, providing frameworks for addressing inequality, democracy, and human rights. In environmental ethics, philosophy helps us navigate the moral responsibilities we have toward the planet and future generations, urging a reconsideration of our consumption patterns and environmental impact. Moreover, philosophy also shapes personal life, helping individuals question their values, identity, and purpose. By engaging with philosophy, we are encouraged to think deeply about the ethical implications of our actions, not only for ourselves but for society as a whole. Relating philosophy to the world, therefore, is a dynamic and ongoing process one that continually asks how we can align our intellectual pursuits with the practical needs and ethical challenges we face in a rapidly changing world.

To continue to insist that PBS and especially NPR are still centrist discredits the first speaker. No truly objective listener can argue that NPR has turned into the National PROPAGANDA Radio. There are many stories that they do not report about, most of them that are embarrassing to the Democratic Party. In this election they extensively played lengthier excerpts from speeches by Democratic candidates, excerpts that are practically political commercials, often even playing out their attacks on Republican candidates. The speeches of Republican candidates are usually simply given short shrift by story narrators and what ever quotes are played are always the worst ones made in their speeches. One gets the strong feeling that everything is presented from the Democrat perspective. On top of everything, PBS and especially NPR have turned very ideological, strongly defending leftist positions advocating against human-generated climate change, supposed police racist treatment of minorities, favoring transgenderism, support of immigrant flows into the country, growth of government with regulatory powers, and other issues that people with conservative leanings don't want to be constantly fed, usually in very tricky ways of false objectivity. So to attack "rightists" for being skeptical of the media should not have a place in a forum like this. The attack should be on ideological advocacy. Things will not change until the present "mainstream" media returns back to refraining itself from injecting its biases as if that's in keeping with a mistaken goal of "educating" its public.

International law practitioner here: international law is only as alive as the parties to it abide by their obligations. Despite international law's impact in the past, since 2022-23, we saw an never-before-seen assaults on the UN Charter, IHL and human rights law, precisely because more and more leaders do not want peace, but actively foment war, hatred and disunity for their own gain - and many people support them all the more for it. The question is whether we let international law die entirely with false reassurances, complacency and double standards as we descend into a kind of global civil war, or whether we can find the resolve to unite and turn things around. The responsibility is on us and our governments. I have to say, the odds look grimmer with every passing day, over time I've been putting my trust in God and the human capacity for justice more than in international law and institutions.
