I hated this movie. It was so depressing. The fact that all of his motivation to survive was for him to finally get to the fiance and after he finally gets to see her she is married and bred with another man was such a gut punch. I don’t know if any of you have ever had to say goodbye to the love of your life, but it’s something that you never get over. Ever. I don’t care what you say. I don’t care if you move on and get married I don’t give a shit what you do. You will never forget that and you will think about it every single motherfucking day for the rest of your fucking life. It’s an emotional life sentence. Women are not the same as us. They are just not. I’m not saying that they don’t ever go through hurt and pain etc break up and divorce for them is definitely different than it is for us. They don’t take it as hard and they move on better and easier. I mean there is a reason that they outlive us. But anyway, this was a great analysis of the ending and the movie in general. I absolutely agree with you on virtually everything that you said, but it still doesn’t erase the fact for me that it was the most deflating thing I’ve ever seen.
@TroyDRamos
@TroyDRamos 11 күн бұрын
Firstly, thanks for your kind words about my analysis and thanks for watching. I appreciate that. And as for saying goodbye to the person who you thought was your “person”, been there done that, as well. I do think you’re on to something when it comes to never forgetting. I would imagine it’s like a death. No way we’re forgetting that. It just so happens I’m reading this great book on Adlerian psychology called “The Courage to Be Disliked” right now. The book is really blowing my mind. It’s basically a guide to being happy, the obstacles to that and his thoughts on how we create that life. He throws down some big, bold things that many ppl would scream in anger about. Idk if I agree with him but I find it fascinating. One of them is that the past doesn’t exist, nor does trauma. He says also that life has no meaning. It’s a blank slate. That doesn’t mean it can’t HAVE meaning, but that it will only have the meaning we assign to it.

My point is, for me, and I’m just saying for me cuz I’m not smart enough to advise anyone on anything haha… that has helped me. Do I forget the heartbreaking things in my life? Nope. But knowing that I’m in control of what they mean and the impact of them is very empowering. Back to the movie, I do think it’s heartbreaking when he returns to find she’s moved on. The more I watch the movie though, it becomes clearer each time that he was never supposed to be with her anyway. Often we don’t know that until we go through the process perhaps?
@TroyDRamos
@TroyDRamos 11 күн бұрын
That’s why I love the very end so much though. Cuz he finally finds the courage to be happy. He’s been through it all and is still breathing. So why not go after that beautiful woman or whatever path he chooses? Be kind to yourself, my friend. Enjoy your day!

No, it was a stylistic choice at the time. I’ve never done it since. But copyright is always something. I have to be careful of so that’s probably a subconscious thing at work, as well. Some people review movies and play video of it, but I don’t know how they’re getting away with it.

I haven't seen it , but I'd rather go and see "The Silent Hour" instead of this, and I watched Joker 1 in cinema 7 times . @TroyDRamos 13 күн бұрын
I’ll check out the silent hour for sure. I’m very impressed. I don’t think I’ve come close to seeing a movie that many times in a cinema. I saw interstellar three times maybe four, that was probably the closest. I will say this though about Joker too… There’s a part of me that thinks it’s possible. I’m gonna go in there and come up because people have said it’s so bad, I’m gonna end up seeing some sort of a weird experimental art film. It’s wishful thinking. Like think of the most obscure David Lynch films. Is that what’s turning them off? Is it just that it’s terrible in every way? It’s hard to believe. That’s why I think I’m gonna have to see it.

My take is a little different. Chuck's odyssey starts with a full plate. Chuck has a career, a beautiful fiancé, a loving extended family, and strong work relationships. There was nothing missing. This fullness in his life was symbolic of what, even then, is missing when viewed through a different lens. When Chuck landed on a deserted island fullness is redefined. Chuck had all worldly connections removed. Hope could only, then, be directed upward. Chuck lay in the raft as if being crucified. Life was no longer in his hands. Looking upward on a wrecked raft for redemption, it was time for divine intervention. The rhythm of the waves where life is believed to have begun takes him to his Creator who gives him life. A boat, much like an ark, saves him.

Very interesting thank you! Weirdly, after I read your take, for some reason the movie Titanic popped into my mind. That’s where I thought you were going at first. Now I need to think about this, but I’m wondering if there are any parallels there (Titanic being maybe the story of a woman bored with having it all, plays with the idea of giving it up but lets Jack sink to his death realizing that she was gonna be just fine doing what she’d done all along and returns to life a bit reborn)

Thank you. I find this film continually reemerging as my favorite. It was clear on one level that Sofia Coppola brought a great insight into the human experience. And by returning to Japan with only these two, she created a stark exposure of how our human experience was shaping two people a generation or two apart. On a second level her total removal of anything "environmental" into which either could run or turn or hide for cultural comfort created a context that pushed taking a risk. A risk on a safe stranger and the risk of making oneself vulnerable. Doing so created opportunity for us to comfortably see the humanity of two basically good people emerge from the clutter of the environments in which they lived their daily lives, environments in which they know they are lost. And their risk taking engaged them not just for the other to see, but much more so, for themselves to see it in themselves. To see their own humanity and how they might live it again. (This is a from-the-hip-comment. The commentary here is far superior so, again, thank you, Tony.)
@TroyDRamos
@TroyDRamos 18 күн бұрын
That’s so beautifully said, William. Thank you for your comments and for your kind words about my video. I really like everything you’re saying. Emerging from the clutter of our environments to make that connection, to take that risk… That’s so spot on. And it’s inspiring. I think that’s one of the things that make some movies great is their ability to inspire us to take and possibly apply to our own lives, whenever applicable. And like you say, I think this movie brilliantly provides that opportunity for all of us. On top of just being a great watch with great actors and a great story. There’s a deeper significance, at least to me. And it sounds like to you, as well. Thanks again. Great comment!

Thanks for this video, Troy. It’s been on my list since you dropped it, and I’m glad I’m watching it. Though I’m not all the way through it, yet, this thought popped into my head, and I’ve had to stop and draft this comment: It seems to me that the cluster of genres around “mystery,” regardless of the form of media, have always had the potential for transcendence, and the best writers / directors / makers of them have always been aware of that fact. Having written that sentence, I can see, now, that it seems to be true, in fact, for every art form. There is always a continuum, from the naive, through the commercially oriented “product,” to work that tries to grapple with the deeper questions of our existence. - All the best!
@TroyDRamos
@TroyDRamos 23 күн бұрын
You’re very welcome and that’s great! I hope you’re enjoying it. That’s very interesting what you’re saying. Yeah, I think you’re right about transcendence not just in certain genres or fields but in every art form. Maybe it’s just another word for many things like, leveling up or going deeper or inception level structure. Or transcending those structures are going deeper perhaps. Whatever it is, I think it’s definitely, about grappling with the deeper questions by existence. So yeah, good thoughts!

Movies used to make A LOT more money. Hollywood doesn't want to admit that which is why they stopped adjusting for inflation. Actors lie about their box office totals as well, they stopped tallying the films where they were the draw, and started taking credit for franchise films which have nothing to do with them. For example Sam Jackson is actually box office poison, his movies all flopped hard. But he took credit for Marvel, Tarantino, and Star Wars so people pretend that he is bankable. The real stats are: Highest grossing movie: Gone with the Wind - $6 billion Highest grossing R rated movie: The Exorcist - $3 billion Highest grossing Actor - John Wayne

The ending of Cast Away reflects themes of change, loss, hope, and the human capacity for renewal. Chuck’s journey is a metaphor for the resilience of the human spirit and the idea that, even after profound loss, there is always the possibility of starting anew.
