Hi, what is the best frequency for locating Fibre optics and coaxial cable for rogers? Thanks. Hope you notice this.
@travisberan70107 ай бұрын
Any lower frequency. 512Hz is used a lot for fiber. Just make sure the other end is grounded.
@SubsurfaceSolutions7 ай бұрын
512Hz if the far end is grounded. However, if you're around underground power lines you may want to move it a little higher to avoid interference.

You will need a cellular connection to obtain an accuracy better than a couple inches. Otherwise the SG receiver would be at best about 18 inches in an optimal situation.

Agreed. I'm sure it will be in the near future. However, if you can map within an inch and re-locate that point within an inch would you need to use a marker ball?

Tracer wires do not need to be bonded on either end to perform locates. You do however need to close that signal with your own ground.

Agreed, but grounding the far end gives it an 'off ramp' to direct it what way to go.

Agreed the RTK Pro is great, but neither of these systems can be used with most DOT's the tolerance they require is pretty low. The RTK Pro literally does the exact same thing as the RD, and the screen looks better. I don't mind the extra weight.

@HunterGeophysicsAustralia10 ай бұрын
Do you mean the GPS precision? It showed one of the points as being 0.5ft at 1:13 into the video.
@SubsurfaceSolutions7 ай бұрын
When you say 'offset' are you referring to Datum shift? If so, our app automatically adjusts for this. If you are referring to accuracy, then the SG will get down to under an inch 99% of the time. Just depends how far away you are from the base station you are using for corrections and your current view of the sky.
@SubsurfaceSolutions7 ай бұрын
That's a good catch. I should've picked a different point to show. I'm assuming the user started at the house and was working towards the street. If they would've started at the street with a better view of the sky they would have had a better result at that point.

Vivax is killing it with the Vloc Pro 3 RTK. Way easier than this, nothing has to be attached to the receiver, points instantly sent to the cloud as you locate. RD is WAY behind the curve on mapping.

You haven't seen the 8200SG. With its advanced multipath rejection. It doesn't float like the Vivax, it doesn't require a subscription and has a built-in phone holder. But I still like the removable GPS for mapping above ground features and in times you need better reception

I slipped and completely ate dirt during a locate in freezing rain last year and I watched my RD7100 slide down the road. One truck just drove by like nothing happened (I know that they saw me but just didn’t care). We were both fine in the end; I would never intentionally hurt my favourite tool/toy. I had an earlier version that had a cylindrical rocker that I loved too. That poor soul died in the rain and was too obsolete to replace.

Nothing above will affect a RD unit. Electrical below may be a problem. Every utility inside a building is normally bonded to each other and the building, which causes you to light it all up. Isolating and getting a good ground is key, but inside a building that hard. We may shoot a video soon on this.

@SubsurfaceSolutions7 ай бұрын

@HunterGeophysicsAustralia Жыл бұрын
Sorry, but I am a bit confused by this... it looks like you're initially using the locator on its own to locate the cable, and you note that there is a sudden increase in depth, which is where you marked on the ground with red paint (my understanding is this sudden increase in depth is where the fault is). You then switched to the A-frame and found something else further along (also marked with red paint). Then at the end of the video you came back to the original red paint marker (where the change in depth was noticed) and said that was where you need to dig. I don't understand what the second marker (made with the A-frame) was for... and why you'd even need the A-frame if the locator can detect the fault (by looking at the change in depth). Could you please explain these two points? Thank you.
@SubsurfaceSolutions7 ай бұрын
Faults create a distorted magnetic field that will give escalated depth readings, which is your first indication there is a problem nearby but doesn't pinpoint the location as well as the A-frame. There were two faults on this line but the first location was worse judging by the higher decibel reading and should be investigated (daylighted) first.
