This my favourite Christmas hymn I love singing this verse on Christmas morning in church the tree is lit the candles are burning the manger is full because the light of the world is born

Many of my ancestors, bearing the names Cruddas or Croudace, come from Hamsterley and the surrounding areas. It’s clear they were Baptists, and through my research, I’ve discovered that many of their births and burials were carefully recorded in the church registers by Charles Whitfield. In searching for more information about him, I came across this video, which has provided a fascinating insight. I had no idea how significant Hamsterley Chapel and Charles Whitfield were in the history of the Baptist movement. I imagine quite a few of my ancestors must have attended his funeral.
