We felt really safe the whole trip. We did camp at places marked as "established" on the ioverlander app, so most had a gate or some times a night security guard. We did stay in any free sites on the beach, we wouldn't feel safe doing that.

can you do the same thing for a vehicle TIP or is there a minimum stay outside of Costa requirement? thanks a lot!
@ChrisTovahsAmazingAdventures
@ChrisTovahsAmazingAdventures 18 күн бұрын
For a foreign vehicle in Nicaragua it can only be in Nica for 1 month and then you need to take the vehicle outside the C4. So you can go to Costa Rica or it going north you have to go to either Belize or Mexico. The good news there is no time the vehicle needs to be out, so you can drive to Costa Rica, get your passport stamped to enter and exit Costa Rica and then return back with your vehicle to Nicaragua, do a new TIP and your good for another month. There is also another option to request a 30 day vehicle extension in Managua, you can do this twice, so with your initial TIP your vehicle can stay for 90 days. With this option you have to wait a few days for the paperwork, so unless your in the capital region it is easier to do a border run. We have done both options several times.

Check out our Pan-American trip route video, it has all the details of our route South and where we stayed. We also have a video that shares our expenses for the month we spent driving down. We camped the whole way, except in the USA when it was still too cold (we were traveling in Jan) and we stayed at one motel near the el Salvador border because it was really hot. We found the whole trip to be really safe.. we had so much fun but 1 month did not allow us to see as much as we wanted...so we just finished a 4 month trip traveling from Costa Rica back to Canada to visit. We camped and spent a month in each country along the way. Check out those videos as well, we detail out route and where we camped. So it can give you lots of insight and options. Safe travels and if you have questions we are happy to help.

Could you point me to a video or discuss the challenges of bringing that truck back to Nica?
@ChrisTovahsAmazingAdventures
@ChrisTovahsAmazingAdventures 29 күн бұрын
We can bring it to Nicaragua but would only do so on a temporary basis. Foreign plated vehicles (it is Canadian) can only stay in Nicaragua for 30 days at a time and then you need to do a border run with the vehicle. We have done this multiple times with our escape. Our home in San Juan del sur is only 45 minutes from the Costa Rica border so it is some what easy. Going north you would have to travel to Mexico because the vehicle must leave the C4 (not just Nicaragua). There is another option to travel to Managua (the capital city) and request an extension to keep your vehicle in country for 30 additional days (you can do this twice, for a total of 90 days before you have to do a border run). This process takes a few days for the paperwork, so it is 2 trips to the city each month. We have done it both ways. We wouldn't import to Nicaragua permanently because the taxes and fees are way to high. If you want a vehicle in the country permanently your best bet is to just buy something in Nicaragua. We have a video on our channel that outlines all the fees (and challenges).

I live full time in Costa Rica but I have never made the drive. That will change in a week. Bought a truck in the US and I'm going to drive alone to CR through El Salvador which I love. Going to cross into Mexico at Brownsville next week grabbing some Peso's there also.

You are going to have such a fun trip. If your Spanish is not great we highly recommend that you have a cell plan that will work as you travel, Google translate can really help you out. Hi, Thanks for all the great info. We are from Fort McMurray and hopefully be moving to Costa Rica next year. In one of your videos you mentioned bringing extra fuel was it ever a issue crossing the borders I have heard that it is not allowed? Also how well did your Tom Tom work? Thanks
@ChrisTovahsAmazingAdventures
@ChrisTovahsAmazingAdventures Ай бұрын
We did take extra fuel and did not have any trouble with it at the border. But having made the trek you really don't need it, there are loads of fuel stops. Our Tom Tom (loaded with Central America maps) worked pretty well. We always cross referenced Tom Tom directions with Google maps on our phone to choose the best routes. That said several times we did end up the wrong way on a one way or driving through a central market LOL.
