i know the video's old but i'm just curious, what have your thermals looked like with this machine? running hyprland on arch and i've had it thermal shutdown before, which sucks because it's a really cool laptop; i tried repasting it but the thermal change was marginal.

@asaudrey 22 күн бұрын
Late reply, sorry. I replaced my thermal paste with the standard one you can get on Amazon. It works great. No heating issues. I use to have a Samsung laptop that would shut off all the time due to overheating. I never fixed it because I was a kid at the time, but maybe the cpu fan? Replacing it with a healthy one. Also, I’d imagine there is a way with FOSS to control your hardware more efficiently. I wish I could help, but that’s all I got.

@@asaudrey i appreciate a reply either way :) i ended up trying to turn off turbo boost using some modified bios online that gives you a ton of control over every setting. i haven't tested it much yet, but i heard that was giving people heating issues. if i still have issues w/ it, i'll probably replace the fan as you said (and maybe try some stronger thermal paste like the grizzly shit or whatever) the guy who sold it on ebay kinda shafted me tho. poor laptop smelled horribly of cigarettes and had scratches all over it. feels like my duty to repair it and give it a good life lmao

Just want to say that DisplayPort has been the gold-standard for businesses for over 10 years, and that is mainly because they are cheaper than HDMI. DisplayPort requires no (or a very cheap) license to manufacture, where HDMI needs a paid license. So even today, most business-focused laptops will come with DisplayPort in some form. There are of of course exceptions to this.

I owned both a x220, x220t and a T430, the tablet was very very nice to use on a daily however it was so good that I wanted to do more than the specs allowed me to do. The form factor is near perfect for mist use cases. One thing holding it back to me was the screen, not much options to repair or upgrade it without paying half the cost of the machine and older screen show they age sadly.

I still use my X220 as my work laptop and have done since I bought it new it has had a tough life working in an offshore environment being lugged around and knocked around, still works as good as the day i bought it. Only upgrades being an SSD and more RAM and Windows 10 . In fact I still use my even older X200s as my personal machine, upgraded with an SSD more RAM and Linux. Both work flawlessly and I have no intention of replacing them.

I have the Core2Duo powered X200 - it's very similar to yours, aside from being wimpier. I don't have the fingerprint reader, and my WACOM pen doesn't have a red button (although if you rub the "button" end of the pen on the screen, it can function as an eraser). Also, my machine doesn't not have a trackpad on it, just the touch point and the screen. I also have the X200 Ultra Base - which is a docking station that is small enough to stay attached to the machine if you want. It does almost double the thickness of the unit (more so at the back), and prevents you from using the higher capacity battery - but it gives you more ports (including a DP port) and an optical drive. I've had Windows 10 loaded on this machine, but I went back to Windows 7. Strangely enough, the operating system designed for use with the Surface Tablet doesn't actually let you do as much "tablet" kind of stuff as Windows 7 does. But they are great machines, and enjoyed actually "writing" stories on it...

Nice! The X220 is a great laptop, even still today it can be usable if you have one with good specs. The red tip on the pen can be programmed to act like an eraser, just like a Wacom tablet. Well, the Lenovo pen actually is a Wacom pen for the Wacom digitizer in the display. I still have and sometimes use the predecessor: the X201 tablet. Of course it is slow by today's standards, but it can still perform well with basic tasks. The keyboard is the best laptop keyboard ever, the trackpoint is really precise, and the touchscreen really helps with input. Windows 10 works like a charm.

I'm getting one of these shipped in soon. If I were to install Linux to the main hard drive, would I need to remove the supervisor password to boot that? I don't care about switching the boot order or booting from USB, I only need to boot from Linux on the main drive which is already first in the boot order.
@asaudrey
@asaudrey 9 ай бұрын
I think you should still try and remove the supervisor password, you will be able to downgrade or update bios. But if you don't care, you can still boot from any hard drive, just press F11 (I think) and boot into the hard drive. you should be good. You technically don't need to but I always recommend doing it.

@@asaudrey as cool as you are you should be recommending he doesn't remove the supervisor password, and instead flashes custom BIOS firmware onto the machine instead 😎you can do it with the most popular and fortunately cheapest chip ever, the ch341a and a second machine. TBH this review is a bit incomplete. I have the very similar X230 Tablet, but you didn't mention several relevant things and issues. Just to name a few: The speakers are HORRIBLE, basically useless. I have low standards but these actually genuinely don't want to use. You mention that the Computer is nice and quiet, but you still probably need to use headphones anyway. These devices are some of the few that are Librebootable which is a huge thing which is weird for you to omit since you already mention Linux. At least on X230t there are versions with and without backlit keyboard, but they can be swapped out. Some more info about the performance and battery life would also have been nice for someone interested in this. You could also have mentioned that the batteries are no longer available new. The original ones by now are all more or less worn out. They would need to be cell swapped, or you could buy fake aftermarket ones which are much less good than the original out of the box. BTW I wrote a small script to rotate the screen with the rotate button when using KDE Plasma Wayland. It's on Github: KRotateScreen. I agree with your conclusion though, X220t/X230t are great devices and I highly recommend them.

Got mine in 2016. Was at a recycling center. Got me through my Computer Engineering program. I couldn't believe the amount of people approaching me in random classes in aw of the machine. I found an OEM battery and it lasted but now it's basically dead (It lasts 10 minutes). I'm using this machine watching this video. The few downsides are the batteries (now), the rubber tabs to hold the screen in place break and there are no suitable replacements. The idiotic ones on ebay don't have the stubs to stick into the holes. Without these, the keyboard eventually scratches the screen during travel (rip my screen looking nice). Also the machine has terrible cooling. Many people try to swap the X230T cooling into this machine.

This works!!! Thanks a lot. I just used a metal pin to shortcut the two feet, and actually didn't disassemble the central units, just tried to disassemble the top cover frame, loosen the two central screws, just to be able to peel to the back the black plastic. That was enough to reach the chip. I had to wait a bit before shortcutting the feet. Thanks again, I was going crazy that I had set a password I couldn't remember myself!!!

This laptop is not enough for drawing, especially if it is anything serious. For my work had to buy i7\3060. Also this wacom for laptops\android tablets is not very good... When I get to do lines, even on huion 24 I can feel slight wobble. For art I would suggest to buy at least some reliable chinese tablet brand and laptop with latest i7. Can cost you 1-2k but it will pay for itself.

The older Thinkpad lineup in particular is probably as close as you can get to laptop computing perfection if you're someone who values the ability to repair > looking like a hipster with a slim laptop.
