I remember hearing that same Camel's pilot blipping it's engine at Rhinebeck during a landing. It seemed such a weird way to regulate speed because the threat of the cylinders loading up and stalling the engine.

Excellent I think the style they are showing is called Defendu. I believe it was invented in the thirty's for English police men by a English police man please correct me if I am wrong. This other stuff like hitting a man with a military helmet came latter on developed by the same man for the ww2 military. I believe his name was Fairbanks William an ex marine and then a police man for a very long time and he was tough as hell.
