After watching that BYU-SMU game many years later, and if one can take away the 1st two minutes that hugely favored SMU and also take away the last two minutes that hugely favored BYU, I came away thinking BYU actually dominated that game… What likely happened was with the blowout by SMU in the 1st two minutes mainly due to luck and a couple of BYU mistakes, BYU was rattled but settled down eventually. One could clearly see BYU dominate the line of scrimmage and eventually climb back in it.

My Uncle, a BYU grad and Professor, left the game in the 3rd quarter and didn't find out that BYU won until he reached Las Vegas. I always wondered how Craig James and Eric Dickerson felt when they played against Jim McMahon, Via, and several others on the 1980 Cougar team when they were in the NFL.

Keep in mind it's the mythical National Championship. There were a few undefeated Jo Pa PSU teams that didn't get that title years before, he just bought them National Rings. I thought they deserved it. We the fans think of it as a Championship and fair play. But it's really all about money, and who gets to keep it; as well as who doesn't get a chance to get it. If BSU and TCU go undefeated, we'll see how "fair" the polls and the bowls are. Forever a Cougar Fan!

It was a killer season from the start.. losses to FSU / UCLA / Penn State but that San Diego State game was like being at the 84 championship game though it was 52-52 tie. Ty still was playing brilliantly!

1984. What a great season. That first game on ESPN I think was called the Pig Skin Classic and nobody gave BYU a chance. Little did they know... The film fails to mention how Oklahoma's Coach and the media just kept putting BYU down. Switzer and Sooner in the Orange Bowl against Washington insisting that game winner should be #1. Bryant Gumbel calling BYU's opponent Bo Diddle Tech. Robbie Bosco and Company finished as the only undefeated team in the Nation #1. UW 28 - OU 17

BYU Golden years.. failed to mention that the LDS Church / Spencer Kimball made a concerted effort to put MORE into BYU football. Steve Young did not serve a mission because he "could do more for the church" playing football. It was a fun time to be in Provo and the new Stadium! Beating UCLA and winning the Holiday Bowl again!!

at that time, iowa and byu sort of owned the holiday bowl because it seemed like at least one of them was there during the 80s. it's too bad that they didn't meet more than that one time.

RB Thor Salanoa and Waymond Hamilton were good. I was actually pulling for Mizzou in teh Holiday Bowl. but BYU always played tough with anybody. Came back and won again. I was a lil kid. They got my respect there and pulled for them in the 1984 Holiday against Michigan while Pops was cheering BYU. 1983 BYU could have been champs too, if they beat Baylor in thebeginning of the year.

BYU all the way- great QBs Sheide, Nielsen, Wilson paved the way for the greats who came after them. Maybe Nielsen would have won the Heisman in '77 had he not gotten hurt-that was too bad, but at least Marc Wilson came on and helped save that year for BYU
