It's a good idea, but if you look at the map records, the vast majority of trophies are on baitfish. But it doesn't hurt to try something different.

Just using the mouse scroll wheel, sometimes you will break the line if you don't unlock the reel in time, but that's part of it. I've lost count of how many times I've broken the line on catfish and sturgeons.

Maybe as the guy said in the comment, the best path at your level is breams and carps(crucian and gibels). When I was at your level, I fished a lot of bream until I had trolling equipment or equipment to fish for bigger carp on Bear and Amber. But apparently trolling isn't as good as it used to be.
