Want recommendations? Anything by Studio Ghibli. Every one they have made has been a work of art. Some of my favorites are Spirited Away, Whisper of the Heart, and Nausicaa. But many people hold Princess Mononoke or Howl's Moving Castle as their favorites. One of the best is Grave of the Fireflies, but do NOT start with that. It is gorgeous but will tear your heart out, stomp on it, and leave it hurting in the dust. If you have kids, Totoro is great to watch with them. If you have young teen kids, Kiki's Delivery Service is perfect. They will like The Cat Returns as well. I have never experienced Dia de Los Muertos. But I have experienced something similar in Kyoto, Japan. Same theme but to guide the dead they light giant fires on the hillsides in the shape of Japanese writing characters. Quite spectacular. If I remember it is called "Daimonji."
