People abandoned the town because of the mines all dried up, that was their main livelihood. They all left and built another town where more minerals are. It is no different how we drill for oil.. once its gone, people keep moving to another until all of them are gone. Eventually, all oil will be scarce and it will be super expensive. There was also a fire on the town that made it harder for them to recover.
