I was a kid when I saw Cats with mostly the OBC. I know the phrase “blew the lid off the place”. I was literally aghast by the power and emotional sense Laurie made of the role. It was like King Lear. She made it work, and made it feel like it was something that she was experiencing once in a lifetime. I remember not being able to process the fact that she did this eight times a week.

That's her whom I saw at the first CATS! omg! I found her at last! 😮💖 Her song is the best as Grizabella for me! 🙂

How magical are some performances? I saw this when my son was little- (he's 26 now) and was astounded by the powerful voice that came out of this tiny woman. I remembered her- even though thru the years I have searched for this clip & only found Elaine Page. I had never seen Cats, so didn't know much about it except that when I heard Elaine sing Memory it was different than how I remembered seeing it on Reading Rainbow. I don't know why tonight I just thought of it again, & thought, "Gee, maybe it's under Reading Rainbow" & walaah (or however that is spelled) here it was. So, long story short , a 2 minute clip that I saw decades ago, was powerful enough to make me search for it again all this time later. Elaine was excellent, but my gosh Loni's power was second to none. Just awesome. It brought tears to my eyes even after the third time I replayed it. Can you tell I'm a theatre nerd?

@ Susan Savard, I 100% agree! I saw this episode DECADES ago back when I was around 5 years old (For comparison, I'm about to turn 37 now) and all the videos on KZbin of Elaine Page performing as Grizzlebella looked and sounded VERY different from what I remembered as a child. As a child, I was COMPLETELY blown away, hearing Loni Ackerman sing in this clip for the first time. This is what first got me interested in Broadway's and musicals. Elaine Page, though very talented, never quite captured the magic I remembered from this clip. I just assumed that, being a 5 year old at the time, I was just "misremembering" or distorting the greatness of it. Then, like you, I decided to search under 'Reading Rainbow', and *VOILA* ! IT'S JUST AS BEAUTIFUL AND MAGICAL AS I REMEMBERED!

Also, audio quality massively varies cos recorded on a quite possiblt tech that was outdated in 1960's so not really fair

Natalie Toro sounds likes a cat being strangled (no pun intended - possibly). But seriously - nobody will ever beat or better Elaine Paige - FACT.
@rossmandell87344 жыл бұрын
Paige is the best actress and she really evokes the great pain and loneliness that Grizabella feels. But Betty and laurie are better singers.

Kim, Loni and Laurie... damn. Always love Betty too although I think Laurie wins for me. She was literally dying of breast cancer when she did it and you could hear that 'final plea' in her performance. All were breathtaking though and deserved to be up there. Thank you so much for posting

Nearly impossible to follow Betty in that, but some of these ladies did a fine job, particularly Kathryn Holtkamp. Some seemed to be struggling or were over-reaching. I don't know what Natalie Toro was trying to do. Good god.

I remember this episode always playing on tv, and I use to so mesmerized by the stick she used to make her face white color. And then when she added the red lips it felt so satisfying and magical.

In modern Hollywood there's generally less makeup and practical effects. Would you want fake fur and leotards in a Thundercats movie? It's about adapting the stage experience to big budget Hollywood production.

She has a special singing timbre and good acting through her voice for Grizabella. Truly sad to know that she isn't alive anymore.
