Your performance of this favourite piece on that organ is simply splendid - very well done : plus, you have used the score with the aurally "correct" A Natural rather than the aurally offending A Sharp which enhances the feelings from your performance

That was beautifully played and on one manual too. I could see you weren’t happy with the coughing and I could understand totally. Fortunately the music blocked a lot of it out.

Beautiful piece. I am a distant cousin of Richard's. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio and is buried in North Olmsted Ohio both of which are in Cuyahoga County. I was also born and raised in the Cleveland area and live 20 minutes from where he is buried.

This lovely March can be found in « L’Organiste pratique », volume 2 (there are twelve of them), opus 41, number 5 (out of 6 pieces), by Alexandre Guilmant. The composer signed « Paris, 11 juin 1874 ». The work was originally meant for harmonium. Back in those days, Guilmant lived in Argenteuil (where painter Claude Monet had also settled down, in the 1870s). I’ve been lucky to be hired as the resident organist to the Basilique (shrine) of that city, so far. Some of “The Practical Organist” was composed in Argenteuil, and according to his indications, the registrations mentioned by Guilmant still fit the organ which was built in his time (1867). A later arrangement (“The Practical Organist”, reprinted by Dover) shows all volumes in a raw, on three staves, with pedal. I’m used to playing after the original edition for harmonium, though, dubbing chords et adding pedal to my taste, instead of following Warren. I think it’s up to performers (and it’s their job, even) to adapt harmonium music on the organ they meet. (That’s Samuel Prowse Warren (1841-1915) revision. G. Schirmer Editor, New-York (NY), 1889.) Very nicely played. It felt like hearing music from a bandstand, on a bright day, along the river Seine, back in the “good old days”.
