I wouldn't say it wasn't woke at all. A female kick-assiest of all kick ass soldiers kicking the ass of a room full of stronger males soldiers by herself is pretty woke. A character needs to be written in a much more clever way to overcome such odds, not like this. Even if it was a strong male it is still not believable.
@multiversebooks

They needed to indicate she was either bioenhanced or cybernetic. The script tried to imply she was just the most elite but I agree it didn't convince. On the whole though I tend to steer intentionally away from realism most days so even though I notice combat implausibilities I don't really care.

Thanks for the spot on title and accurate review. I happen to enjoy movies with female leads, so I was excited for this movie/series/universe. For a comparison (not sci-fi, but movie with a strong female lead), Long Kiss Goodnight is where my head is at. I really, REALLY wanted to like this movie. There are certainly scenes I enjoyed, and visually, it was amazing! I 100% agree it should have gotten a full season run, something like the first season of the Mandalorian even, which each episode being of enough length to tell the story it needed to tell. Unfortunately, we're just not given enough reason to care about most of the characters. Sidenote: Run, don't walk, and go see Godzilla: Minus One. I won't hijack this thread with a review, but it's earned it's 98% rotten tomato score. That's a movie that show what character investment looks like.

The whole jump-off for the story is that the Not-Empire wants to take the single season’s grain harvest from a minor farming planet. Said farm is run by not 50 farmers that choose NOT to use robots or other automation to plant, grow, or harvest their crops. This doesn’t sound like a strong harvest to me. But Im expected to believe that an intergalactic not-empire 1000 generations old DOESN’T possess the means to feed the troops on its spaceships? Do they live solely on grain??? It seems like I could take over the entire not-empire without firing a single shot by opening 10-20 McDonald’s and offering the troops a tastier alternative to Fascism-for-oatmeal.
@multiversebooks
@multiversebooks Жыл бұрын
Yes this was poorly exposited. The script tried to indicate 1. that this stolen harvest was to bolster lacking supplies on just the King's Gaze and 2. that really Noble is just bullying people while on the hunt for the Bloodaxes. Reactions from lots of viewers make it clear these elements didn't stick the landing.

You didnt catched any of the typical woke elements? You joking?! :DDDDD (the cast of main, and side, characters...and the ways they are used all throughout the story...is diversity, inclusion and WOKENESS incarnated! What movie have you watched?!) This movie is trash, even without the pervasive wokeness...and that just adds MORE trash to the pile...
@multiversebooks
@multiversebooks Жыл бұрын
Yeah I'd say you can nitpick to find some woke sticking out but it just wasn't egregious enough for me to notice on one late night watch. The main things I watch for are sermonizing and the belittling of mythical-style heroes. Racial diversity makes sense in a galaxy wide setting but even in this movie most of the humans in focus are olive skinned or lighter. We could probably tear it apart on this front with a deep dive but that's not what I'm up to!
@dimercamparini
@dimercamparini Жыл бұрын
@@multiversebooks As I said...you dont have to "nitpick"...is pervasive in the movie... And for spreading wokeness you dont need "sermons" with actual words...just images, settings and situations, even without "wokesplaining", can be very powerful to spread "the message"...and is done in this movie A LOT. Also "diversity" in this movie is the big classic: "all colored ppl good...all whites bad..." (the only 3 main white men are 1) a pussy who constantly needs saving from the strong whaman 2) a traitor 3) a psycho...and the rest are just n4zis with shaved heads, reeepists, enslavers, etc...nuff said...)

My biggest problem with the whole thing was the following: world borrowing vs world building - it is okay to borrow but not where it completely overpowers the building part. Huge lack of dialogue - Majority of dialogue seems to be written by a toddler. Overuse of slowmo (yes I know it is his expertise) when you overuse this, it takes away from the awesomeness it can be. Complete lack of character building - and yes even including the main character who apparently is just Gamora if I go by backstory (once again borrowing). Utterly confusing - If I go by the robot, the royals were like this great and noble leaders, 10 seconds later shown as a despotic lunatic that is a warmonger, then shown as a regretful leader, just utter nonsense. Soooo much opportunity wasted.

We'll never get better movies if everybody keeps ragging on everything after Star Wars because nobody will take a chance. Star Wars has some of the worse writing and special effects ever but it get's a pass because it was first. Who could forget the osar winning dialog of the Phantom Menace? Who can forget all the added special effects over the years. You may call Rebel Moon a clone but it never felt like one IMO. It sure is the best clone so far. I liked Rebel Moon more than the recent version of Dune. All the other clones were super campy until the recent Dune and Rebel Moon. Tell me I'm lying. Most of you reviewers are rushing to judgement and may kill a good franchise before it gets started.

There were other blatant rip-offs too. The movie copies like 8 classic movies, adds nothing to their stories except lashing them together without explanation. There wasn't an inspiration made better here outside "effects" if you count adding slow mo and cutting explanations as making it better... And most are 80's to 90's fare.

The good: Costumes are cool. Visuals are pretty good. CGI not bad. Action sequences not terrible. The bad: The story is dumb, implausible, derivative and not very interesting. I couldn't care less about any of the characters. I'm tired of so-called "girl bosses".

Amen to that. Watching 100 pound 5'5 women absolutely dominate every man twice their size in every encounter just drags me out of the story. I also have never in my life met a single girl who wants to be a brutish violent macho man like modern films pretend they want to be. The modern girl boss is simply every negative male stereotype involving machoism and misogyny wrapped up and inserted behind a pair of boobs. They're typically unlikable to both men and women.

@@Vegan_Photographs people enjoy drugs, doesn’t mean they are good. If I build a car to drive on a race track and it’s only capable of driving on my driveway that isn’t a success or “good” by any measure. Definitely feel like it could’ve been a streaming series that allowed more depth for each character but your review was spot on! I’m honestly just happy to have a new entry into the space opera genre! Really hoping this inspires more people to take a stab at the genre.
