Not so long ago, we were also high school students with the dream of becoming healthcare professionals. "I hope I can become a nurse like my mom. Sometimes, she even prioritizes patients over me and our family. But to me, she is always a hero." - Some of us was inspired by the intelligence, empathy, and perceptiveness of healthcare workers. "Volunteering during the COVID-19 peak, I have completely changed. I think my life will be truly meaningful if I can wear that white coat." - Some of us was motivated by the experience of the harsh, stressful yet meaningful medical environment. "I think health science knowledge is fascinating. I can sit and explore it endlessly without getting bored. Everything will connect in a wondrous way." - Some are driven by the desire to understand the mysteries of the human body further. Despite our diverse reasons, we have all chosen to pursue this path. It has not been easy at all. As 18- or 20-year-olds just entering the medical school, the weight of the Hippocratic Oath sometimes becomes a pressure that we must strive to bear. "First, do no harm." We often ask ourselves if we are good enough. Faced with the vast and complex medical knowledge, we have often felt powerless and insignificant. It is not just about grades, but poor performance on exams also makes us doubt and fear that we might harm patients if we continue to make so many mistakes. "When I was interning in the Pediatrics department, I encountered a child who had been diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome since the age of 5. This was the third time the child had been admitted to the hospital. When I examined the child, he was very tired and uncomfortable, and almost did not let me touch them. But after just a few days, when the child's albumin levels improved and the edema subsided, he was running and jumping around the ward like a little squirrel. On that day, the first thing that greeted me at the hospital was that child with a box of candies. "Miss, would you like a candy?" - his smile made my day, and it has been a motivation for me, not only now, but for a long time to come. From the interviews to the very first lessons at VinUni, our professors have always asked us: "Why have you chosen to pursue this field?" The reasons that led us to begin this journey will be the baggage we carry with us forever, motivating us to become better and supporting us whenever we feel weak. In various ways, our professors have helped us understand ourselves better and find an anchor to which we can return when we feel lost. Cách đây một thời gian không dài, chúng mình cũng là những học sinh cấp 3 mang trong mình ước mơ trở thành nhân viên y tế. “Mình mong rằng mình có thể trở thành một Điều dưỡng như mẹ. Đôi khi, mẹ mình còn ưu tiên bệnh nhân hơn mình và gia đình nữa kìa. Nhưng đối với mình, mẹ luôn là một anh hùng.”- Có người được thổi lửa đam mê bởi những nhân viên y tế đầy trí tuệ, thấu cảm và nhạy bén. “Tham gia tình nguyện giữa đỉnh dịch COVID, bản thân mình đã thay đổi hoàn toàn. Mình nghĩ rằng cuộc sống của mình sẽ thật ý nghĩa nếu mình được khoác lên chiếc áo trắng đó”- Có người dấy lên khát khao sau khi được trải nghiệm môi trường y tế đầy khắc nghiệt, căng thẳng nhưng không kém phần ý nghĩa. “Mình nghĩ kiến thức khoa học sức khỏe rất hay. Mình có thể ngồi học và tìm hiểu mãi mà không biết chán. Mọi thứ sẽ liên kết với nhau theo một cách rất kì diệu”- Có người được thôi thúc để hiểu biết thêm về những bí ẩn của cơ thể người mỗi ngày. Dù với nhiều lí do khác nhau, chúng mình đều đã chọn theo đuổi con đường này. Mọi thứ không hề dễ dàng chút nào. Là những đứa trẻ vừa tròn 18, 20, khi bước chân vào trường, sức nặng của lời thề Hippocrates* đôi lúc trở thành một áp lực mà chúng mình phải cố gắng để có thể gồng gánh. “First, do no harm. Điều đầu tiên, không được làm hại bệnh nhân.” Chúng mình thường xuyên hỏi bản thân, liệu rằng bản thân đã đủ tốt hay chưa. Đứng trước lượng kiến thức phức tạp và khổng lồ, đã nhiều lần, chúng mình nghĩ rằng bản thân thật bất lực và nhỏ bé. Không chỉ là vấn đề của điểm số, việc làm không tốt trong những bài kiểm tra còn khiến chúng mình hoài nghi và lo sợ sẽ làm hại bệnh nhân nếu còn mắc nhiều sai lầm tới vậy. “Khi mình thực tập ở khoa Nhi, mình đã gặp một em bé được chẩn đoán hội chứng thận hư từ khi bé 5 tuổi. Đây là lần thứ ba bé vào viện. Khi mình khám nhận bệnh, bé rất mệt và khó chịu, gần như không để mình chạm vào người bé. Nhưng sau chỉ vài ngày, khi tình trạng albumin của bé được cải thiện và tình trạng phù đỡ đi, bé đã chạy nhảy quanh khoa như một con sóc nhỏ. Ngày hôm đó, điều đầu tiên chờ đón mình ở viện là em bé đó với hộp kẹo của em. “Cô ăn kẹo không?”- câu nói đó đã khiến mình cười cả ngày và trở thành động lực của mình không chỉ bây giờ, mà còn rất lâu sau này nữa”. Từ khi phỏng vấn cho tới những bài học đầu tiên tại VinUni, thầy cô luôn hỏi chúng mình: “Tại sao em lại chọn theo đuổi ngành này?”. Lí do khiến chúng mình bắt đầu sẽ là hành trang theo mình cho tới mãi sau này, thôi thúc mình trở nên tốt đẹp hơn và nâng đỡ mình mỗi khi yếu đuối. Bằng nhiều cách khác nhau, thầy cô giúp chúng mình hiểu bản thân hơn và tìm kiếm một điểm neo để chúng mình có thể tìm lại bản thân mỗi khi lạc lối. Vì chúng mình muốn ở bên cạnh bệnh nhân trong thời khắc họ mệt mỏi và yếu đuối nhất, chúng mình đã chọn con đường này. Và chính bệnh nhân là người đem lại động lực, niềm vui, niềm đam mê, khiến chúng mình vững bước hơn, tự tin hơn, mạnh mẽ hơn. Dù mọi thứ không hề dễ dàng, dù đôi khi chúng mình nghi ngờ bản thân, chính bệnh nhân đã giúp chúng mình vững tin hơn từng ngày. Đó là điều khiến mọi VinUnian luôn vững bước. Dù con đường này khó khăn tới vậy, chúng mình hứa với bạn, mọi thứ đều xứng đáng. Nếu bạn cũng có chung ước mơ với chúng mình, bài hát này dành cho chúng ta. My application for admission has been given a run around and nothing is definite. I was admitted to first year medicine but nobody would tell me when the academic year starts.
