Good presentation and important points. The only thing this misses is that KM, like almost anything an organization does, is a continuous iterative cyclic process, not a linear one. In software development, we call the linear development process (strawman...) the "waterfall model". It's not how anything is accomplished. Any phase of a process will and should inform the next iteration of the same phase (planning, execution, improvement, planning, execution, improvement, ...), forever improving. If you only invest effort into establishing KM once, you will fail or at least stagnate.

As part of our knowledge management course competition, we were given the task of predicting the world of knowledge in 2030. As we see it, all knowledge will be concentrated into a microchip that will be inserted under our skin. This will allow for all our accounts payment methods to be consolidated into this personal chip. Through this chip, we can identify, pay and save our information. By doing so, our world will become easier and more accessible.

thx for sharing. So, knowledge has to do with theories about how things are and what they mean for me. How do I know, my theory is right? For exp some 400 years ago people perfectly KNEW the Earth would be flat and the Sun moves around it -they knew it so well that they even killed some other folks for it. too bad that the same weren't killed when it turned out that they were wrong... . google Feynman on knowledge. anyways, nice talk (btw: i probably would just walk away when i don't know what to do with that rising pressure thing and watch from a distance what knowers do with it ...)
@miltonnick9 жыл бұрын
+Luca Lotto Hi Luca Knowledge has less to do with theories and more to do with experience. Knowledge is validated though experience, and the experience of your peers. Knowledge is "right" if the community validates it, and if it works in practice. If you have no experience, and no access to the community, you are powerless to act - so would (as you say) just "walk away" from the rising pressure. A few corrections - 400 years ago everyone knew the earth was round. Since the days of Pythagoras and Aristotle, people have known the earth is round. And Galileo was not killed because he said the earth moves round the sun. He was not killed at all.
@lucalotto2559 жыл бұрын
+Nick Milton ...Hi Nick, Galileo was at least 'socially' killed -he was refused contact to almost everybody, including his daughter, who killed herself, when she found out, that all her letters to her dad were read by the inquisition first and then she even got forbidden to receive letters from him at all. Giordano Bruno was burnt at the stake for claiming the Sun is at the center and is only one star among millions. There were many others, not so famous ones, who were burnt & tortured for claiming things, that challenged 'accepted truths, and later turned out to be indeed 'true' - not only by the catholic church but in almost every society. If you say, 'Knowledge is right, if community validates it' you're also saying that community defines truth -probably the same community is then also setting up the validation process, upon which we would decide, something is true or not. Furthermore, take Einstein, we hardly read about all those guys, who claimed Einstein's SRT would be pure nonsense (even in twenties, when E. already got his Nobel price, some guys came up with "Jewish Physics crap' -we mainly read about Planck, accepting his 1905 SRT paper and those others, who admired the simplicity of the maths and the straightforward, though astounding conclusion of time being relative (not absolute) and space & time being connected. You're right -400 years people 'knew' Earth is round -some Greeks found it (among others somewhere else), but folks in Europe forgot it for a while -Dark ages etc. - However, I am convinced that in that time, people were burnt for claiming Earth is round -just add another 300 years or so. For me that knowledge thing always was interesting - that's why I commented (got the link to you vid from a mooc somewhere (accounting?). Anyways, I go with Feynman when it gets to 'knowledge'. Your view is more from the management perspective -and I am fine with it -but only in that context. no offence. (btw: what's your stand to the current VW emission fraud in this regard. I mean, 'everybody knew' the values were within specs - and what about those (& there surely were some) who opposed that view from even within VW (quality, software testers etc) -were they wrong and 'community' was right? -still no offence.)

Dude do some more research, a lot of people know about the struggles Einstein faced and 400-300 years ago there were already quite some amounts of globes. It was widely accepted that earth was round in those days, even in columbus' days. Make sure that you also read stuff that is against your views and not only stuff that supports your views, otherwise you won't learn anything

Thanks Nick. As a relative beginner, I've been allowed a little while to demonstrate that some KM practices can improve the situation in our company, now I'm being asked for metrics to produce figures to justify the effort and I was a little lost, frankly. I now have a really good starting point and the ideas are flooding in once more.

Thanks Milton. I would like to emphasize on one point. For organizations starting to use or implement best practices. It’s vital to understand that it’s not enough to use best practice as a starting point to implement. There is a context - as mentioned - that made it best practice. a context that might include an environment, culture, etc. It’s only a starting point which is not ready for implementation. This understanding would help to minimize copycat behavior.
