First of all I would like to congratulate you on the video you made! Top,very informative and tatsetfully made. I also had a bit of a smile on my face when I heard that you mentioned the type of buyers..... either nearly retired or retired...... Yes, you were right. For me it has been the same. Before the banking crisis I owned several classic cars, all around the early-mid '60 s (Jaguar XK 150, Alvis TE 21 DHC), but I had to sell them off due to that crisis. Since last year i became to realize that I had more 'past' than 'future', so I decided to make a boys' dream come through. Being a real Alvist for many many years, I ended up buying the ultimate dream, in my case an Alvis Speed 20SC Cross & Ellis tourer with double spare wheels on both sides. I did not know you were a member of the AOC too, so it could well be we'll meet somewhere next year. Greetings from The Netherlands ;-)

Bentley or sporty specials are good - but very costly. Forget boring saloons from this period. Not impressive. No social scene. Expensive to have work done. Slow and unsafe. Horrible. What's the point?

For decades now, you could buy an old car and drive and enjoy it. When it came time to sell it you would hope to get your money back of maybe even more than it cost you. However , in the near future, with the advent of electric cars and the uncertainty about availability of fuel in the future, I don't think a lot of people will be prepared to invest a substantial amount of money in something that they may or not be able to use or sell. Also, very soon all learner drivers in the UK will be learning on electric cars. So no new drivers will have a licence that enables them to drive a car with a manual gearbox. I think the prices of old cars will plummet in the not too distant future.
@Classicandsportscar112 күн бұрын
Thanks for your comment. Today's new drivers are unlikely to have interest in older cars and if needed, synthetic hydrocarbon fuels are already available. Classic cars have a good future. As for electric cars, take a look at the current massive manufacturer discounting and depreciation when used. That's the market I suspect we need to watch. The vast majority of the car-buying public remain unconvinced.
@andy4141713 күн бұрын
Good advice but if you are a diy a humble brand in US like Ford has many parts and clubs to enjoy once you commit to a different driving experience. For those unable to match speeds of engine and transmission an original gear box with synchros in 2 & 3 is available. Other parts are available to increase road speeds and braking. Look for a car with this done for good value and enjoyment.
@Classicandsportscar112 күн бұрын
One of the impressive things about the U.S. classic car market is the great availability of remanufactured parts for a whole variety of classics. Compared to the UK they are very competitively priced too. We're just rebuilding a 1957 Ford Thunderbird. Great parts and technical support from the U.S.A.

I myself have recently become more interested in prewar cars, and not too far from me, a 1935 Austin 10 Litchfield has come to the market been in storage since 1964, the current owner has got the car running! Ready for its new owner very tempting for $2000! What's your opinion on this model? Cheers
@Classicandsportscar113 күн бұрын
That sounds a low price for a running car. Commercial restoration is unlikely to be viable because the finished value is not very high. However, if you or some folks you know have the skills, it could be a rewarding project. Make sure the oil pressure is healthy. Engine rebuilds can be costly.
@richardorosso737712 күн бұрын
@@Classicandsportscar1 Yeah is low but don't think it's regarded as very desirable here in NZ, perhaps because fewer "older" people interested in the basic pre-war cars, for me though love the history I have a good mechanical aptitude so I am tempted, but the engine does run beautifully and has zero rust although the paint is very tired.

Yes, I always found vintage cars very useable, if well maintained, though I did have a lot of expensive problems with magnetos. I found the Austin Heavy 12 very nice, mastering the gearbox was satisfying, but I couldn't get on with a central throttle on my Lea Francis, I had to convert it as I knew that after a lifetime of driving I would be reacting automatically in an emergency and mashing that middle pedal. I love the character and quality, and the fact that what a man made on a lathe in 1925 can be duplicated today, unlike an ECU.

I had a 1938 Morris 14/6 barn find, which I partially restored. Great car but almost un-useable in country lanes, as the turning circling would put an oil tanker to shame! Parts were the biggest problem as being produced just before WWII, it was made from various parts bins - whatever wasn't being used for war production was used on this car. The 6 cyl engines were produced in Paris, and were metric, whilst the gearbox etc, were imperial, with a complete mixture of threads. Car had a full history and log book, only 3 owners from new. I put it up for auction at £10-12k but in the end accepted £7k after it failed to sell. Now driving my Landy series IIa.
