Hi, I know I'm late to the game, but my understanding is that the jtec engine has a 3 plug ecu harness connector, whereas the later ngc engine has a 4 plug connector. I'm just wondering where in the engine bay to look for this stuff. thanks in advance, and thanks for making this video.

Sorry, I don't know about that connector. I didn't mess with the ECU, but I know it is different and that's why I had to change that reluctance wheel.

Please consider this friendly commentary, but I have never ever heard of using sealant on a coolant hose. That water pump housing could be replaced or, refinish the pitted piece with a strip of emory cloth to make it smoother for reliable sealing. A very nice aluminum water pump housing is available. Also, using the correct hose clamp size would be much better. If you use the correct size clamp, you will not have all the extra long excess hanging there. The correct size will seal better too. Oh, excuse me, I just heard you say, "my nipples are rubbing"! That is also not a good thing. Take care of that before anything else.
@JB_WI_Triumph

I have seen others use sealant and I think the sealant data mentions it. Some of the old stuff is pitted and it really helps then, but the other thing that I found is the silicon hoses are harder to seal. I have had to use two clamps before, and then after 200 miles I can remove one of them. It all worked, was just a fight for a bit.

Dammit I was just hoping to do this myself on my ion without disconnecting my brakes. Someone did the job on my old pontiac g5, and I never did get my bleeders off and had air in the system. Is it any easier to do this job with a hoist or will they just suggest new trailing arm all together?

Agree with the other comments the detail is excellent - thank you. Just had to replace discs on mine (apparently forgetting to tighten the wheel nuts up, seeing the wheel overtake you at 50mph and skidding to a halt isn't good for discs!). I saw you said you did up the castellated nut on the spline to about 10lbs, mine is much less - literally did up to touch the D washer finger tight and backed off to nearest split pin hole. At 10 lbs I can hardly turn the hub. Same both sides, changed both discs although one was perfectly good. No wobble on the spline and quick couple mile test drive to bed the brakes seemed ok. Should I be worried? '59 3A
@JB_WI_Triumph
@JB_WI_Triumph Жыл бұрын
Well first of all, I am no expert so you need to decide for yourself in the end. Finger tight seems a bit too lose to me. I put in new felt grease seals though and those can really screw you up. They compress a lot in the first miles you drive them and I found that I had to go back and tighten the nut up some more after 20 or 30 miles. If you put in new grease seals too, I would recommend checking for wheel wobble a few times until you believe it isn't going to change anymore. If you didn't put in new seals, then the ones you had are probably already compressed and so less torque seems appropriate. You don't want the nut so tight that it causes undo effort to turn the wheel, and if you really have no wobble, I guess it's hard to argue with what you did. Did you check for wobble with the tire on so you had some mechanical advantage by holding the outside of the tire? You might notice it more with the tire then with just the disc. In any case, I would keep a close eye on it for a little while just to be sure. Good luck with it.

Honestly I had too cut/drill holes in my back seat same two bolts didn't come out and it was a flaw by manufacturer for some reason the have little holes next too both bolts if they would have sealed it, then no elements no rust presto stoopid nut would have worked. Although the more I took apart more I found I had too replace going too see how much for complete control arm while it's apart and not worry for another 110,000 miles. I didn't cut the bolt because I thought it was a hardened bolt, but maybe it would have been easier to suffer through that than what I did. I don't remember for sure where I got the bushings, but Dorman sounds familiar. Sorry, memory not so good anymore.

I am not sure of all the problems you may face changing ECM and harness. I just decided to rebuild the engine while I was at it on my project and then swapped the reluctor wheel. If you can find the part number of the wheel for both your engines, and they turn out to be the same, then I think you will be fine. If they are different, then you have to decide whether to swap ECM et. al. or change the wheel in your engine.

Thought it would be a direct swap.🤣 It might be I have not checked yet but won't be my luck. What do you mean swapping computers? I'm guessing I'd have to change the computer and engine harness. Just trying to figure out which would be a easier route to take. If you have any advice I would appreciate it thank you?

Removing the shocks and springs allow you to remove the four bolts that hold the hub and drum/backing plate onto the rear axle. Removing the drums off the axle makes everything easier to deal with. You must remove the clip holding the brake hose and fitting and grind a slot in the bracket so the brake line can be freed from the bracket. No need disassemble the brakes or to disconnect the brake lines or E-brake cables.or to have to bleed the brakes afterward since they're not disturbed except for moving them out of the way. Kudos for the bushing installer tool - I use a press. It should be noted that, often, there is no noise associated with worn bushings in the Ion. The most noticeable symptom mine had was an unstable feeling when driving on rutted pavement and lane changes at highway speeds and my bushings were just as bad as the ones shown here. White knuckle time.

@stormlang9298

Yeah I did this all on the ground and I removed the springs to roll the axle arms down I didn't remove the trailing arm retaining brackets from the frame because I didn't want to snap those bolts and that was before I watched your video so I'm glad that I watched it afterwards but getting the old ones out was about the same process you did the only difference was I used a reciprocating saw to cut out the rubber internal and make relief cuts around the inside of the bushing housing to knock out the old bushing and that worked pretty good and the new bushing has gone in all but the last quarter inch that I need for it to fit inside the bracket ears so I used a 2 and 3/4 clutch pulley from the back of the bushing to give equal pressure while pulling it in so as to not snap out the center pin because I didn't have the steel around to make the tool you made I have seen purchasable tools for that job online but none that are specifically for that car and I've noticed small differences in other trailing arm bushings as in size and build structure so they're not as universal as the tool says they are

@@stormlang9298 Do any of your local auto parts stores have the free loaner tool program and a bushing install took/kit? Otherwise, maybe you can find a socket or pipe that fits around the perimeter of the bushing and you can try to drive it in. By driving on the rubber bushing though, instead of the solid part, it is going to be tougher. If you can only hit the outside edge though, there isn't a lot of rubber to compress before you get to the steel bushing carrier. Another idea is 4 C-Clamps and try to draw it in evenly. That's all I can think of so far.

I have about 500 miles on it so far, running nicely now. I did have tranny episode though. I got a TR6 case which is stronger where it meets the engine, and moved my guts into it. I left the reverse lever that was in it alone and just used it. It worked on my bench test, and for one drive, but then I got stuck in reverse. The lever slipped out of the reverse gear's groove. I put it back and tried to move the lever inward be loosening the nut and tapping the shaft in, but it happened again. I finally had to pull the tranny out, tear all apart, and replace the reverse lever. Once I got it out, I could see that it was bent and that was the trouble, but a big pain. Since then it has been running great. The only trouble is I have so much contract work right now I don't have time for anything else.

One question was the water pump seal a hard rubber or a soft coz we have a vanguard and they have the same engine and all that the water pump is the same and ours was meant to be rebuilt but it leaks like crazy coz the seal in ours was like a hard plastic is that right
@JB_WI_Triumph
@JB_WI_Triumph 2 жыл бұрын
I don't fully remember anymore, but I think the seal had a metal outer case with rubber on the inside. I took mine apart to powder coat it and then I sent the parts to the Flying Dutchman to machine it to except modern bearings and seal, don't have to grease it anymore. I would suggest contacting them, I bet they can upgrade your pump and supply a good seal.

I am so glad I watched your video before changes out my daughter's "04 rust belt Ion.rear swing arm bushings. Her bushings were so bad that if you pushed on the rear of car sideways the rear tires would move forwards and backwards most of and an inch total. Around corners it felt as if a tire was flat and the rear wanted to steer all on it's own. I got a Dorman kit that included both bushings and 2 new center bolts with self-locking nuts for around $50.00. On jack stands, I removed the rear tires, hooked a come-a-long from the rear axle to a front cross member so as to limit rear axle movement and left the brake lines, shocks and springs attached. I did not attempt to remove the swing arm mounting brackets from the body. Way to rusted up ! I then cut the old passenger's-side bolt in two to get it out. The drives side bolt was no problem. Then placed a bottle jack below each coil spring and rotated the axle around the still-attached shocks just enough to bring the bushings below the body while not over-pulling on the brake flex lines. Then sawed and chiseled old bushings out. I then drilled out the brand new bushing bolt holes from .482" diameter to .500" and used 1/2-13 NC all thread with longer 1/2-13 coupler nuts and plates and a special spacer bored to 2.78" ID to allow the smaller end of the new bushes to finish "pressing" at around .165" pass the outsides of the swing arm. ( I have a lathe in my garage. My bad) Amazon sales a swing arm bushing removal-install kit for about $130.00 with shipping. I lowered the bottle jacks so the swing arm reentered the body brackets. I then shortened one new bolt by .375" and sawed off a hidden corner of the front edge of the passenger bottom rear wheel well just enough to install new bolt on the right-hand side. Then jacked the swing arm up to ride height before torquing bolts.
