This exact store, and the car park contain so many cool memories for me as a kid growing up in the 90s. Before kids used the internet, and would go out on adventures on their bikes. I remember when this was built. Before Tesco was there, the land contained a large portacabin, which was my playschool. And next door was our family GP surgery. I used to live opposite, on triandra way. I loved that playschool and I remember feeling sad when my mum told me that my playschool was being knocked down so a supermarket could be built. Mum said, "I don't know why you're sad about it, you're getting too old for play school, you'll be starting primary school next year - I was 4 years old. Once the store was built I had started primary school, and mum would be stopping off there every afternoon after she got us from school - even if it was just for some milk and bread. My little brother and I would love going to either the toy section, or to the alcohol aisle. Not for booze obviously, we were little kids, it was because the alcohol aisle would always be the emptiest aisle in the store. Which meant we could run down it and slide on our knees, as the floor surface was so smooth. The look on mums face when seeing the state of our school uniforms, once we would meet her at the checkouts, told us were getting a few hits on the bottom from her slipper when we got home. Lol. I used to love Sundays too - when the store used to be closed. We would either go over to the brand new surface of the car park on our bikes, or take my remote control car over there. We lived so close my mum would send my older sister and I to get some bread or milk whilst she was cooking. this is whilst we are both under the age of 10 - something that wouldn't be safe enough to do these days. On one of the occasions mum had sent us over, Irish travellers had just moved onto the derelict wasteland opposite the store. (Which is now burger king and B&Q). I'm guessing some of the traveller kids had been causing mischief in the store, because my sister and I both got turned away by the security guard. It didn't help the fact we are an Irish family, my sister and I look stereotypical Irish, and i was wearing an ireland football shirt. So I couldnt blame the security guard for that. But our mum was not happy as we had been loyal customers from the first day it opened. She rang up to complain, and the management were very apologetic. They gave her tesco gift vouchers as form of apology, and my sister and I were allowed to go back and pick the essentials we needed. Years later I got my first job at this same Tesco, at the age of 17. Back when some people would mock a job at a supermarket, which rightfully is not the case these days. Stacking shelves can be the start of a very successful career. Sometimes i wish I stayed there. Great job, great staff, great memories. Great video. I would love to find footage of when the the store first opened in 1994/5. That search is what lead me to this video. The floor is still the same as day 1, and the clock tower.
