(fellow ace btw 💙) - I do agree there's too much fanfiction about this one guy that literally is used exclusively as a plot device. Clay Terran was created due to lazy writing, because Capcom realized "oh shit, Apollo exists" and they needed a pronto emo-phase for him/a plot point. Clay Terran is shoved down our throats, inserted as a close friend not mentioned in other games even once before, used purely to account for Apollo's shortcomings as a character (which tbh goes back to how in Apollo's first game, where he was supposed to be a developing protag and a main character, instead he third-wheeled in Kristoph's & Phoenix's divorce.) - Clay Terran is basically Capcom trying to salvage the messy character they left to rust along Shu Takumi :( - I also agree that developed characters (I'll use your example, Maya & Fran) which have depth, potential, backstories, connections + interactions with other characters DESERVE more spotlight. But here's the thing. People write fanfics about things they're disappointed about. The more someone is dissatisfied with something, and the less content there is of it, the more likely they are to write something about it and "fix it" or "put their own spin" on it. Lemme explain: 😎 Statistically speaking, fandoms which are solid, good, a long series, topic exhausted and done, with most plot-points neatly closed off nice and tidy have less fanfiction - than a series that left you wanting more, a series that was incomplete, or a series that didn't dwell on an issue for long enough for fans to be satisfied enough to walk away from it. Just look at Lord of the rings (topic neatly finished, 61k fanfics) vs. Voltron (the queerbait anger still persists to this day, 90k fanfics)... alongside AA trilogy (old, well written) vs. AJ trilogy (clusterfuck) There are other variables like, how long a fandom has existed, what demographic it falls into, language barriers etc. but this ⬆⬆⬆ rule generally stands true. Reason 1 - For our example characters (Maya & Fran) we've seen them plenty in the game. There has been a lot of content on them in the trilogy, we know Maya to hell and back by this point. We got an anime. We got official art (20+ years of it by this point). We have plot-points and some thematically-exhaustive moments for both of them (Fran breaking down over Edgeworth edginess, Maya with every murder case she's a suspect or victim + her complex family relations). Food was served. Reason 2 - for Clay fanfics, and by extension Apollo, we've seen very little. Dude got one game where he's not even the focus. Dude didn't get an anime. Dude has like 4 pieces of official art. People were starving for content. Clay (since a long time) was the only shot of having something, ANYTHING for Apollo. His death was basically Apollo's only shot to get meaningful spotlight and creator love in a long time (7 years) (they fucked it up anyway) - People had the creative freedom to think up whatever the fuck they wanted, and, similarly to you, they were PISSED OFF and wanted something better for Apollo. Dude has been cheated out of his own game and put in Capcom's broom closet (same with poor Klavier 🥺🎸✨) People (artists especially) see wasted potential and they cannot contain their own ideas and wishes, so they try to fix the frustration in their soul by writing, drawing, or animating, etc. Clay might also be seen as a self-insert (ew) and has a design that, as you said yourself, would be a smash for some people (not me tho 😅) I'm of course leaving out the entire random variable of "some people are just horny" because those fanfics, while still exist, don't need too much reason and they don't influence the statistics? At least, my statistics? I might be too hardcore ace for this 😅😅😅 Sorry for my yapping it's midnight and i got coffee. Thank you for coming to my TED talk 💙💙
