This is actually a relatively simple logic puzzle. Where I get into trouble is with the ones full of negative statements, "Jack wasn't the person who spent five days (who wasn't the person who found the compass or the person who wasn't in the Indian Ocean." Do you have any advice to offer for those?

Thanks for an interesting question! You've made up an example of a clue that has not only a lot of negatives, but also an unconventional logical construction that doesn't appear in puzzles like the one in this video. Well done! And you're right, the puzzle in this video is relatively simple. It's just big, so the grid exercises solvers' attention as well as their logic. I'll answer your question based on a reworded version: "Crow Vecchio wasn't the person who read five books (who wasn't the person who found the map or the person who wasn't in the kitchen)." First off, notice the implication that more than one person was in the kitchen. The clue allows us to conclude that one and only one person wasn't in the kitchen, so all the other people were in the kitchen. Thus, the grid for your made-up clue goes must have two or more O's ("yes-es") in the kitchen row (or the kitchen column, depending how the grid is drawn). Wait, two yeses in a row or column? Is that even possible? Of course it is possible. It's just unconventional. The puzzle in this video doesn't have that feature, but if you want to learn more about logic grid puzzles that do, you can see my video "Create distinctive logic puzzles: YES and YES". Another tip is, if multiple negatives are causing confusion, try paying extra attention to pronouns and their antecedents. The antecedent of "who" in the reworded clue's phrase "who wasn't the person" is the five-book-reader. No matter how simple a logic puzzle is, you will always get in trouble if you mix up the antecedents. I hope this helps!

How did you know where to position the largest and smallest? Or, would it have made no difference?
@reckonmath174
@reckonmath174 2 жыл бұрын
Great question. It does make a difference. If we didn't know the locations of the largest and smallest bottles, we wouldn't have enough information to solve the puzzle with certainty. Of course, Hermione the fictional character knows where the largest and smallest bottles are, because she can see all the bottles right in front of her! But Rowling chose not to reveal those locations to the reader. I think she did this to make the puzzle scene more fun and mysterious. The kind people at pottermore.fandom.com/wiki/The_Potion_Puzzle realized eager readers would need more information to solve the puzzle. They provided an image with the missing information. It's a bit like fan fiction! The missing information from that website is what I mentioned at 0:22 in the video and referenced as "Clue 5" in the video image.

Thank you for the video. This was informative, but I had to continually pause the video so I could read the screen and think about what was being said. Giving the viewer time to process the information would have been helpful.

Hi! Thank you for the suggestion. I understand what you're wishing for. Like you, I often have to pause KZbin instructional videos for extra think time myself. Besides pausing, another option for changing the timing of a video is Playback speed. To get there, click on the gear icon ("Settings") at the lower right of the video. In most KZbin videos, the menu that will pop up includes "Playback speed". Hover over "Playback speed" to choose your preferred speed. Most people who use this feature do it to speed videos up, because they prefer a fast pace. However, you can also use it to slow videos down. I hope this idea helps you get the most out of KZbin!

Finally someone explaining how to make CLUES to the puzzles. Thanks you for your video! Do you recommend any book about logic puzzle design?

Great question! I don't have recommendations for this kind of book - do other viewers have suggestions? In the meantime, the more logic puzzle variety you encounter, the better. I recommend seeking out and solving logic puzzles written by a variety of authors for a variety of audiences. When you are exploring, don't skip logic puzzles without grids - those are good too!

The only thing I haven't 100% understood is point 5! How do I check X's and o's starting from clue facts?
@reckonmath174
@reckonmath174 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for asking! For small puzzles like this one, the info you want is from 2:23 - 2:31... after that point, inspection confirms that the Clue Facts provide enough information for the solver to complete the puzzle. For larger puzzles, go to this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5aTXmSPe7B4nbc and watch the next 15 seconds.
