Couple of things about the Backun Alpha. Standard rubber thumb pads don't fit this thumbrest. Also, I find the pinky keys on the Alpha, especially the right hand ones, to be too high and make it harder to cover the holes reliably. And, I think that, overall, the spring tensions could be lighter, especially for less experienced players. I have Buffet clarinets that were set up by Brannen Woodwinds and the Clarinet Center, and most of the keys are set lower, especially the pinky keys, that on the Alpha, and the spring tensions are lower as well, though, in my experience, most professional model clarinets come from the factory better set up for the average player than the Alpha. I know the Alpha is technically a student instrument, but its keys and overall sound are near professional quality, and I think this instrument deserves more attention to the set-up than the average student instrument, though of course there is an extra expense in that.

'You might be in high school, you might be in college', or you might be in your 30s (and a high school teacher!) and never touched a reed instrument before and is self teaching! Thanks Laura for this video, really helpful. Clarinet KZbin is pretty limited - there's definitely room here for someone who's a great teacher like yourself to do more like this.

D'Addario is correctly pronounced: Daddario.

I tried one of these some years ago a found one of the notes was so stuffy as to make the instrument unusable for me. I think it was the C#/G#. Also, the instrument arrived (from another dealer, not directly from Backun) with the bridge mechanism badly out of alignment. Perhaps these were just isolated manufacturing defects and not an indication of generally poor quality control (you obviously got a good instrument), but it put me off trying another one.

Wow. I just got a Yamaha 221 II. 2,500 is what paid for it I wanted Buffett bass but I just can’t due to the 13,000 for it. I’m so glad you were able to get very nice professional bass.

A blank is cane that has been cut to the right size but hasn't had the vamp fully cut into it yet. The part you are calling the vamp is actually the stock.
@whoitisnot4 ай бұрын
Strength is NOT about thickness - it's about density of cane which is determined at the factory (at least for Vandoren) by testing the flexibility of the tip with a puff of air. Yes, you can make a reed softer by thinning the tip, but that is not how it works on the manufacturing end.

Another information that I actually want to know after the upgrade is the convenience of the keys. This is something we can't feel as the audience, but clearly something that most people forget. For an untrained ear they would probably find there is not much difference in the sound after the upgrade or "why upgrade for a so subtle difference in sound".
