Im actually following your videos it helps a lot for me and leaving comment here. Im using Loree royal 1992 made. Do you think is it worth to change to Marigaux 901 from Loree? Is there big change? Marigaux or Howarth had alot darker and warm tone which i want. It is hard to make good tone like you have
@IanWisekal
@IanWisekal 2 ай бұрын
Thanks for following! I agree that Howarth and Marigaux have a "warmer" sound compared with Lorées, but Lorée has made some wonderful instruments, and I have students who sound beautiful on new and used Royals. If you've been playing for less than 5 years, I would experiment more with reeds, embouchure, and reed placement (not too far in the mouth!) before buying a new oboe. That early 90s era of Lorée does tend to amplify more of the higher overtones, so we have to be pickier about our reeds especially, but it should be possible to adjust those elements to make it sing. Once you have your fundamentals really solid - that could be now or in a couple of years - then it might be time to start oboe shopping. :)

Hello professor Ian. Now im practicing Geklers basic oboe. Is it too hard to learn Ferling after this book?

Great question! Are you in Gekeler book 1 or book 2? (Book 2 starts with the Barret melodies.) I make sure students are comfortable playing those melodies - as well as all the scales and arpeggios in the back of Gekeler 2 - before moving on to the Ferlings.

What syllables do you recommend using to help students move their tongue in the right way? Tu? Tee? Tah?

Great question! I usually approach voicing (the "vowel shape" in the mouth) as a separate issue, but I would say "tee" or "tu" is best, since that will set students up to have a focused airstream.

@@musicman1eanda That's exciting about the new instruments! Ahhh this is the except i have to prepare for my states honor band audition! My tutor recommends I don’t prepare the piece at this tempo, but aside from tempo do you have any tips for practicing/preparing this excerpt?
@IanWisekal
@IanWisekal 6 ай бұрын
I'm sure your teacher is a great resource, too, but my #1 suggestion for anything with a lot of fast, even notes: practice unevenly! Pick a nice, slow tempo with your metronome, take a chunk (maybe one measure) and play it really exaggeratedly in "LONG-short" pairs. Then flip them around so that they're "short-LONG." Then repeat the process with another chunk, and then link them together, etc. Once that feels comfortable, going back to playing evenly will feel relatively easy!

Yes that rest is clearly very helpful! Phew that piece is fast!! Anyway just wanted to share some super news with you today. Yesterday I got my new Buffet Crampon Prodige BC4131 thumb plate oboe, and it's absolutely gorgeous!! Wow the sound is really powerful and clear, sure is free blowing which is great news indeed. The keywork is also good for me as I have very small hands, so I now don't have to stretch my right little finger to reach C and D sharp which I had really struggled with before on the rental oboe I had started learning on. Feels a bit strange to start with, but of course all oboes are different, and once I have got used to it, all will be fine. Anyway I now have my very own oboe all brand new, and it came all the way from the Buffet Crampon factory in France!! So much to look forward to, mega exciting!!! 🤩@@IanWisekal

Oh wow Ian you absolutely smashed it!! Where you using circular breathing to be able to play so fast?? My oboe practice today went fairly well. I was trying out different reeds this afternoon, and I decided that the medium soft one that I bought from Dawkes Music plays best at the moment. I'm very excited because I will be getting my brand new Buffet Crampon Prodige BC 4131 thumb plate oboe very soon. It's being made at their factory in France, and hopefully will arrive by the end of January. I absolutely can't wait to try it out!!! I'm currently learning on a Buffet Artist oboe which we are renting on a trial basis from our friendly music shop in Tunbridge Wells, Kent. This was a birthday present from my dear husband last May, and life is so exciting now!!! So far, I'm learning Grade 3 scales and arpeggios and sight reading, challenging myself every day to try something new. I buy my reeds online, as the thought of making my own fills me with horror!! I'm no craftswoman, so perfectly happy to continue buying reeds. Just have to find what works best for me!! 🤩

Great question, Lam! It's not easy, but it's possible to breathe quickly and deeply with a feeling of relaxation. You can practice by putting a long, relaxed breath in a certain passage first - 3 or 4 beats long - and then reduce the breath to 2 beats, and then 1 beat, etc.

Hello! On measures like measure 5, I tend to swell on the last note. Any advice?
@IanWisekal
@IanWisekal Жыл бұрын
Great question! It sounds like you may be used to playing a little crescendo ("wah") on long notes. If that's true, you'll need to consciously make a diminuendo instead! Start the note with plenty of air and a more open embouchure, so that it's loud enough, and then collect the end of the note with your embouchure. It might take a little while to break the habit, but you can check your embouchure position in a mirror as you play: is it opening or closing during the note? Have fun - I love this melody!

Hello! I am a freshman and I have to play this for an audition in the next week. I have most of the stuff down besides the breathing. Do you have any advice?
@IanWisekal
@IanWisekal Жыл бұрын
If you listen carefully, you can hear that I took *lots* of opportunities to just just exhale, just inhale, or (when there's a big enough rest) fully breathe out and in. Make sure to take enough of these, or it will be hard to make it to the end! I recommend looking for places close together to pair quick "out" breaths (I mark them as "O") with "in" breaths (I mark them as "I"). You get the feeling of a full breath without disrupting the pulse of the music. Good luck!!
