Great video thanks. I have the same make and model so bought the same device to fit to mine. Unfortunately the off side exhaust valve has failed in the closed position and will not open. Any suggestions?

Remove the actuator held on by two small bolts from the top, turn the valve open by hand and turn the actuator motor around to match and refit. The valve could also be caked shut due to carbon build-up so may need time freeing it up. Also be aware there is a spring clip mount between the actuator and the valve mechanism, make sure that all aligns up.

Yep aware of that, this oil was for my old BMW which I'd sold, I'd always used Castrol A5 spec 5w-30 on my old Mk1 Honda Jazz, this Mk3 engine should be 0W-20. Should be fine for now as I change engine oil quite frequently anyway and don't rag it around.

Bought mine from a UK eBay seller as shown on the clip near the beginning of the video or search for VW Mk 7 Golf R exhaust valve delete. It's sold for VW but also works on our R172 SLK55 as it uses the same valve actuator.

Hi. You may not be aware, but on your drivers door handle, that rhomboid shape at the rear of it, is the IR Smartkey sensor. I have that on my 2012 SLK R172 250 Sport. The dealer didnt even know it was fitted. Look in your user guide 'Opening and closing with the SmartKey'. Close the trunk partition, stand outside the car, pointing your key at that shape (I have the key a couple of feet from the sensor). Unlock the car on the key, then press and hold the unlock on the key. It will start to lower the roof. Once it's done, let go of the key. You can put the top up by locking the car, then hold the Lock button, it will put the roof up again. The car does not need to be running. Most people don't even know this exists, as it's only the cars with that rhomboid shape on the drivers door handle that can do this. If you leave the trunk partition up, it just puts the windows up, or down. Let me know if you get it to work.

Thanks for this info, mine works as you explained but the annoying thing is you have to stand near the door handle with the button pressed. I'm looking to buy and fit the X car style roof module (not Smart Top) and looking to do a video of the installation and review of it later on this year.

@@leew88 Glad you sussed it. Personally I was looking to buy Smart Top module, before I realised mine had the factory smartkey etc. I just use the factory smartkey. I dont mind standing by the car and putting the top down before I get in using the key...and, it's very useful to have if some a**ole parks right next to you, as our doors are long, and it can be difficult to get in if the top isnt down. Personally, I would just use it factory, as you are introducing another 'non-factory' system into the car, and I don't need to be driving at 40mph and want to put the top up or down (as some of the modules let you do) <lol> as you will probably rip the roof off!

Thanks, coding is different to performance enhancing remaps. Remaps are recalibration of the engine parameters whereas coding is simply enabling features that are already there in the firmware where optional extras were available from the factory, hope this is clearer.

Thanks so much for the information - really appreciated! Question about the batteries- my SLK 55 does not seem to regain the auto engine off function in comfort mode even after I have fully recharged the main battery via an overnight trickle charger. I was wondering if I need to recharge the smaller battery behind the seat to enable this function again? And if so how would one do this? Seems very difficult to access it. Thanks again.
@leew88
@leew88 22 күн бұрын
Could be a number of reasons, the main battery maybe past it's life as I had the exact same issue when I charged my original main battery overnight the start\stop worked literally for 1 or 2 stop\start cycles before it disabled again (voltage drops below its working threshold). The small battery behind the passenger seat (UK right hand drive) is only there for powering the auxilliary equipment whilst stop \ start is in operation. You have to partially remove the cover in order to get to it, these are held on with a few screw \ pop-up clips, storage netting also needs to be unclipped as well. The battery is held on with a bracket and nut should you need to remove it. Measure the voltage of this small battery it should read around 12.5v - 13v in an idle state with engine engine off, you can try charge this overnight and see what happens, but most likely it will be the main battery causing your issue, how old is the battery?
@Farrelbf
@Farrelbf 18 күн бұрын
Many thanks for your reply 🙏 I guess it could well be the main battery as you suspect as it is pretty old. Would it be OK to use a generic battery I.e. not one from a Mercedes dealer as these are extremely pricey? Kind regards.
@leew88
@leew88 18 күн бұрын
@@Farrelbf There's a misconception that batteries purchased through the dealer is superior to all, most are true with the exception of a few items and batteries are one of them. Mercedes batteries are simply rebranded Varta AGM batteries which you can buy via independent online retailers at half the price, the exact one shown in my video 12v 80ah AGM type bought from UK's Tayna Batteries. Of course you don't have to go for Varta, other well known brands such as Exide, Yuasa, Bosch are just as good, just make sure it's an AGM start\stop battery of the correct AH capacity and not a generic battery which was fitted on mine causing all these issues.

Apologies to the previous subscriber who just posted a comment but I deleted it by mistake, the question was did I lose my memory setting, radio etc whilst I disconnected the battery. I had no issues since the auxiliary battery behind the passenger seat provided the necessary backup during the main battery replacement. My dash mounted analogue clock did have to readjust itself as soon as the ignition was switched on but everything else remained the same after battery replacement.

Excellent tutorial! Best if not the only good how-to video that shows all the steps involved, especially removing the air ducts, front engine cover, and integrated airbox engine cover. I recently purchased 2 new genuine M-B air filters for my SLK55, and while the job seems pretty easy and straightforward based on instructions I found online, this video definitely provided me with a bit more confidence to install them. Not a critique, but I would've put a big piece of cardboard on the ground so as not to scratch the surface of the engine covers 😊

Nice car! Subscribed to learn more as I also have an SLK55. How do you know if your exhaust valve actuators are bad? You mentioned that they threw a code(s). Does that also cause the check engine light to come on in the dash? OR do you have to plug in an OBD2 reader to see if there is a fault code?
@leew88
@leew88 Ай бұрын
Engine will hold back and lose power at around 5000rpm. EML light will not illuminate only soft fault codes are stored which can only be read with a OBD2 diagnostic reader similar to the one I'd used. Sometimes when one actuator fails it will cause the opposite side actuator (working one) to cycle between open and closing as it tries to sync up with the faulty side, so if you hear this continuous cycling when you turn the ignition to no 2 without starting the engine then the other side actuator is faulty. Bare in mind you may also have other symptoms like short or open circuit fault codes which may not be obvious without a code reader, hope this helps.

@@leew88 thanks for the info! One other question. If one goes bad, I've read that when the key is in the ON position but car not actually started, the flap actuators will make whirling sound as the good one tries to sync with the bad one. If both are good, do they still whirl when car is on but not started?
@leew88

@@youngp4116 If both are good you shouldn't get any constant noise other than the initial flap movement pre-start.

Thanks for the video. Very useful information. I have an R172 SLK55 as well. Something I find annoying is that I like the cylinder de-activation feature to 4 cylinders in eco mode but what I don't like is that you have to have stop-start on as well. I haven't found a way to turn the stop-start off without also turning cylinder de-activation off. Any ideas?
@leew88
@leew88 Ай бұрын
Hi Christina, I have the exact same idea as you, however I'm kind of fortunate that my stop\start never worked since I purchased this vehicle 6 months ago even though the ECO button green LED is always on and the ECO8\ECO4 cylinder de-activation and brake HOLD function still works as intended. I've researched into this quite a bit and found that the previous owner had fitted a bog standard 12v 80ah flooded battery (rather than the AGM version), so the car has intelligently recognised this situation and disabled the stop\start function whilst keeping all the other functions to work as intended. The 12v 10ah auxiliary battery behind the passenger seat had also been swapped out but I don't think this is the reason it has disabled my stop\start as they had installed the correct AGM 12v 10ah replacement. I will be doing some coding \ programming videos in the near future of some of the features which I've activated already, so I'll take the opportunity to see if this can be coded out without effecting the other functions, watch this space.
