Every couple of years I’ll play a scramble event… then swear it off again , for a couple more years thinking perhaps it’ll be a fair event. I’ve come to realize these are all shits and giggles tournaments, that’s it.

The only way to stop cheating on scramble format is to have a volunteer representative from the event keep score for each group. Otherwise, some people, in their need to have everyone say how great they are to build up their fragile egos, will cheat to win. That's just the reality of golf in this age of social media mega egotists.

Live on a course and our men's club has a Thu afternoon scramble. Usually -14 to -16 wins it. No mulligans, wide variety of hcps. Fun, lotta drinking. Would never bother with a big charity one. Write them a check if you want anf forget the golf.

Simple. Every scramble team has to bring a separate person to keep score. Then the tournament organizer takes the scorer and assigns them to keep score for a different team. That way you have an independent score keeper for each team. ( btw, this was required in the Oldsmobile Scramble years ago).

Cheating is a slippery slope. Once you start, fake one shot, the next one is easier for the entire group. Then add the endorphins of winning and it becomes a habit to cheat. Either, clean it up or give up and just hit your (teams) ball.

Yes. I've seen my friends cheat. No one believe the winners score usually.

I don’t understand the attraction to golf. Golf courses are saturated with pesticides and herbicides. And many golfers are saturated with booze. I can’t think of a place I’d rather not be.😊

Not sure about the rules in USA but in Australia scrambles require each player to take three or four drives. This is a great leveller because the 36-handicapper you add to pad out your team’s handicap won’t be putting it in the middle off the tee every time. It brings a lot of strategy into it too. Do you get the high-handicapper’s tee shots away early? Or do you try to establish a good score early and hope the guy can find fairways later in the round. Still, under this system I’ve seen some astonishing scramble scores. Shame.

Cheaters are going to cheat no matter what the test is! Gotta slow the game down and play 6somes and 8somes. Even that won't stop them from claiming to have found a lost ball in great position to help their next shot.

Every time I play in 4 man scrambles, I do it for the charity event it’s associated with. I never plan on winning because there’s always a team of ringers that will win it. I don’t mind. I still enjoy the day and I helped a cause.

Overtime(s). MSU will score 21 points in regulation on 7 Jonathon Kim FGs and Michigan will score 21 points on 3 TDs. Both teams will kick FGs in the 1st OT (24-24)...both will get TDs in the 2nd OT and miss the mandatory 2-pt conversion (30-30). In the 3rd OT, both will fail on their 2 point tries. Then, in the 4th and final OT, U of M will run it in for 2 points and MSU will get called for OPI on a pick play and then fail to score from the 17 yard-line. U of M 32--MSU 30 in 4 OTs.

Hi from Scotland. I won’t name the club but two of my friends and myself played in a 3 man scramble our handicaps were 7 5 &2 we were bogie free We were second last out when we put our score in we were leading with obviously one group on the course. The three were members of the club we were playing the organiser came over and asked to take our photographs for the presentation as in his opinion the group had no chance of beating our score. We watched them playing 18 which they bogeyed. They entered their score five minutes later and looking very embarrassed the organiser came over and said I can’t apologise enough they beat you by 2. 😡

Just like politics, it punishes The Honorable and rewards the pieces of sh🤬 Here's my solution. Bump the entry price by $50. Hire 18 local high school kids or part-timers as scorekeeping officials. Assign each one a hole and have them monitor the play and track the score of every team on their assigned hole. Remove the scorekeeping from the teams. No more shenanigans. Either that or allow 2 full teams per hole. I know, I know, more than four people golfing at the same time is for some reason the cardinal sin😒

If you think that's bad, I saw something yesterday that took the cake. In my senior league, I saw a fellow chip his second shot on to a par3 closest to the pin green. He then measured it and wrote his name on the closeup sheet.

I’ve never understood golf cheating. If you win, you know you cheated. The victory is tainted and you know undeserved. It means nothing. Or if it’s for the money, you’re going to risk reputation and conflict for $100 gift card to the pro shop? Just a huge waste of time.

Never, never, never enter a Scramble event with any expectation of winning. Between handicap fudging, mulligan sales and women’s tee upgrades it’s not happening. Treat it as a day out of the office, networking opportunity or a chance to support a charity. Played in one recently and our team played real good, but missed first place by six shots. Got some nice tee gifts though!

I play a 9hole Friday 4man scramble. Usually around 50 fellas. Three divisions that consist of -2 or worst, -3 thru -5, and -6 or better. Normally 2-3 teams in the highest division, 5-7 teams in middle division & 4-5 teams in bottom division. After scores are turned in, each teams picks 1 team member to throw a SINGLE DICE ROLL and adds that to their score. This gives EVERY TEAM a chance at $winnings……unless your team shoots +6😂 . If however a tie develops after the dice roll, the scores are compared to hardest handicap holes birdied. All divisions payout the same amount.

I recently played a scramble where the winning team shot 57. Playing in the group immediately behind them, I can tell you wholeheartedly, there's absolutely NO WAY they shot 57.

I used to play a lot of corporate and charity events, it didn't matter whether the prize was $20 or $2000, too often there was cheating, lots a big egos out there. At one church fundraiser the winning team came in so low that even the pro shop guy posting the scores called BS. When the winners were announced to come on stage to collect their winnings one of their team members looked visibly guilty, like "oh sh*t, we fudged the score too much", he hasn't returned. My friends and my team just play for fun, its a benefit for gods sake,

I have played in many scrambles over the years.. occasionally still do for a "friends" charitable outing. Still have never claimed top prize, usually 3rd or 4th at best with a good score. I will never forget a particular outing about 6 or 7 years ago.. Turns out the winning team with a a score of 54 was the team in front of us.. Obviously had no idea until the scores were announced over lunch.. We witnessed this foursome hack it up all day, not a single player in the group was a low handicapper. They did not hit a single par 3, it was painful to watch.. You could imagine our disbelief as they walked up to claim 1st place. I watched another gentleman lose it as he challenged the foursome to a heads up match immediately which they declined.. It is too bad, scrambles should/could be fun on occasion to play. I enjoy the team aspect, going for shots I wouldn't normally try..
